I have a modded ps2 with duo chip. I've burned ps1/psx games before and they have booted and been able to play on this ps2. Now all of a sudden when i insert the games, it looks like they get past the boot screen(No RSOD)and are going to boot, but then it goes to the 2 memory card selection screen and won't play. I have tried different cd types and burned at different speeds and it hasn't worked. Can anyone tell me what the problem could be? If it is cleaning the laser, please be specific as to how to do this and with what products

also, games that booted before, now don't boot, which makes me believe it isn't the discs or the burning speed

Dont double post, its against forum rules, use the edit button.

Sounds like a laser problem relating to the cd reading part. Perhaps you could fix it by adjusting the cd pots?

There's more info about Pot adjustment in the forums, you'll need to look for it.

MGS, MGS VR missions and FFVII(which used to work). Memorex CD's ( I know) which also have worked

That won't help him if he wants to play the games on his PS2. You could try better quality media. Dunno, supposedly VR Missions needs a patch to remove the CD check, however, all I could find is patches for the PAL version. Memorex pretty much does blow, but most of my PSX backups are on Memorex and they work okay. I wouldn't actively play through a game on Memosux, but for storage they're probably okay. Other than that, make sure your pressing reset twice to access PSX mode for the Duo. What speed did you burn them at? Usually 1/4 the max speed of the disc is satisfactory for PSX games.
