So what's the story on this? Can burned movies play on a PS2? my PS2 is my only DVD player and i got kids. They scratch the heck out of their Thomas the Train DVD's and my own movies from time to time. I thought i'd be smart and back those Thomas, Dora, and Baby Einstien DVD's but it turns out they don't work in my PS2.
But i'm using the good stuff (Verbatim) and they never load.

So i guess i'm wondering...am i wasting my time backing these up to play in the PS2?

I totally feel you on the Thomas the Train DVD's. My 3 year old goes through them as well. I've found burning DVD movies for playback in the PS2 is actually harder than backing up PS2 games. Here's what I did to get mine to work perfectly, even now.. 9 months after I backed them up.

First off, make SURE you use good media. Sony DVD-R and Sony DVD+R (booktyped to DVD-ROM) work beautifully for movies, as well as games. If you can booktype +r, then get the +R's. Also, this is a huge factor in burning movies for ps2 playback. Make absolutely sure you burn at half the media's speed is. If I burn my 16x's at anything other than 8x, they will skip, not boot, sounds fading in and out. If I use 8x, I have to burn at 4x. If I burn at 1,2 or 8x with 4x discs, same thing. And make sure you have nothing running in the background when you're burning the DVD's. I personally use DVD Decrypter to remove the copy protection, then use Nero Recode to burn it back to DVD. You can use the ISO/Read, ISO/Write option in DVD Decrypter, but I like my movies to have the 2 passes obtained in Nero Recode. Hope this helps.

dumb question...what do you mean when you say "booktype" and my DVD writer is only a -R...does that mean i can't do this book typing.

I'm doing the same as you DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter then Nero at a low speed. So guess the trick is the booktyping, just now i need to know what that is.

LOL

If your burner only supports -R then don't worry about booktyping. Only +R media can be booktyped. Make sure you burn the movies at half the rated media speed. I've actually had problems with Verbatim DVD+-R's. The only Verbatim I've had luck with is the Verbatim DVD+R DL's. I stay with Sony DVD's

The PS2 is a pretty low end DVD player, even with the DVD remote. A $40 DVD player you get anywhere will outperform it. Make sure you use good media. Remember the brand of Media doesn't mean much, it's the Media ID that determines quality. Discs with the Sony Media ID don't work in my PS2, I buy Taiyo Yuden's under the Sony name.

91. Q. What is the Media ID of a DVD and how can I find it?
A.The Media ID of a DVD is the true measure of it's quality. It contains prerecorded info about the disc's manufacturer. The quality of the disc will vary depending on the media code. The media code isn't visible on the disc or the packaging. To check the media ID, Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Media ID or Manufacturer ID. You can also use a program called DVD Identifier which is very useful. You can find it here: http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/
Compare the Media ID to this link: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

For info on bootyping, check the burn guides in my sig. There intended to be used with PS2 backups, but booktyping for DVD movies is exactly the same.

There's no need to book type DVD-R's, they're generally compatible with most newer DVD players. If your burner supports book typing, it's an excellent feature to have. DVD+R's book typed to DVD-ROM are the most universally compatible format.
