Hey guys;
I'm no newbie to computers in general; but this is the first time I've ever started to read about overclocking..........I did do a search on google to see if it's possible to overclock a prebuilt PC;;;; some people say yeah and no....so I want your advice... my comp is an Emachines T5026...........some specs are: im running on a 3.06 Ghz P4 and a 200GB hd; 512 MB Ram;; etc...............
Thanx for any and all input; I've heard many times if oc'ing isn't done right that you can fry your whole computer;; so I obvioulsly need some big help if it's possible to OC my comp

Your are pretty much not able to overclock a pre-built system. Sorry for the bad news. And yeah, if you overclock insanely without incrementing little by little then yes u can fry your board.

I know it's just another dumb question; but is there any true reason why prebuilt computers can't handle overclocking???
Or is it just the fact that a prebuilt computer's components don't have the power to do it?

And also; I was just wondering if there's any other good performance tweaks that I don't know about.........if you've tried some and they work, please share....

usually the Motherboard manufactuers lock the menus in the BIOS that allow you to overclock.

Can mod the bios to turn it into a o/c'er. Look around and you may find a unlocked bios. Or even better...find out who makes the board. A lot of times they use store bought mobos with their bios in it to lock it. You may get lucky and find a stock bios you can flash too...

nope the only thing they do is put a custom bios into a aftermarket board. Like I have a gateway board with a intel motherboard. All I had to was find the standard intel bios and its no longer a gateway or locked for that matter... 933 pentium 3 is now running at a gig nice and cool....

Ahh right i stand corrected hehe!
You lear something every day. But they do lock chips for something maybe not in this case but they do for something. Im sure of it!! I read it here somewere
And halen to answer your second question they stop people overclocking so that way they can be sure your computer wont overheat when you try to overclock. Otherwise if you fried something theyd be forced to pay out on the warranty.

Not neccassarily, it can sometimes can be proven you oc. And thus they can say f**k you, we aint warranty'ing it...LOL! This is why its better buying aftermarket and building ya own. Then they usual dont biatch about the warranty and you are the reason it fried...LOL!

my pc is running slow please help. is there any way to increade it's speed other than just sweeping with anti virus and antispyware software. please tell me all the possible ways to increase my computer's speed for both laptops and desktops.

WTF?? Isn't a prebuilt comp the same thing as if you build it except that (in this case) emachines builds it for u...is there something I am missing?

You can re-install xp, use registry cleaners, antivirus, spyware removals, defragment RAM and HDD...im sure u can find freeware for all but u can also buy system mechanic which is not a freeware but it is a very good program! It actually is very, very well priced!

Here is something I have to say about overclocking....do not overclock until it is actually needed cuz it lowers ur cpu's life...unless u have a "ultra cooling system" or something. In fact, if you have a strong CPU, lower clock it!! (slightly)
I have a 3.0 GHz and [I didn't do it yet but] I want to lower clock it to 2.8 GHz and when games become very popular in the future I am going to overclock to its max...hopefully 5 Ghz (so it will last me long for gaming)...bassically don't go crazy for overclocking when you don't need it...even if you see improvements...if the improvements are not needed, do not overclock!! Either that or...overclock when you play games and lower clock when you browse the internet and chat on msn etc...if you overclock as little as it might be...put a mid-range cooling system in ur comp...
If I insult you...don't get offended...my insults are "friendly insults"...I know this sounds stupid (ridiculous) but I am fet up of writing, "no offense" in my posts...

You can change the clock speed (aka overclock) through the BIOS or through software. I've never had any succes with software, so i'd say that the best way is through the BIOS. Is your CPU AMD or Intel?

Yo, s3a, tailschao explain what the manufacturers do that makes it a pre-built system. Companies have to warrant the system hence the reason why they "lock" the motherboard. The other type of pre-built system is a clone. It doesn't have a name brand manufacturer. The parts are simply put together from retail. or oem.
@ neptune, you can do what ozzy214 said if you want to. If you can't find the bios to flash it with then yuor answer is no.
p.s keep it mind that when you are flashing a mobo's bios you can mess up ur board and make it useless. Make sure the bios 100% compatible or else your going to have to buy a new one.

my desktop has a sis video card is it still ok to over clock. also my laptop has ATI radeoon X200 would iit work and should i do it on both.

i think you can do it on your desktop just take your time. i don't know about sis cards, i only know about ati, nvidia, and intels integrated cards. as for your laptop, you're going to want to be even more careful since its a mobile card and compacted in your laptop. take your time gradually overclocking. you're defiantly going to want to spend more time on it then if you were overclocking a desktop. also, keep in mind its going to make your laptop get hotter so it won't be comfortable on the your lap, and depending how hardcore you overclock and can overclock it, you're gonna wanna keep that sucker cooled. some laptops are intentional underclocked for this reason.
