Well; I did some searching and a guy said that you should have DMA enabled; it creates much faster transfer rates..........then; found another article which said that you should have UDMA enable;;;;now I looked it up and figured out that I have Ultra DMA Mode 5 on my comp right now according to the device manager.....well; reading on; they said it's also good to go in the BIOS and also set it to UDMA 5 (if possible; which on my comp it is)

Now; the thing is;; has someone ever done this before so I could get a step by step procedure on how to exactly do this tweak in the BIOS settings??Also; will I even notice that much of a difference if this little tweak is performed???

Thanx;

P.S. any other tips you got to increase encoding/ripping speeds; feel free to post your find!

Can't say for certain but I think my Ripping/Encoding speed has decreased slightly since installing Nero 7. It does have a utility to control drive speed but I have my drives set to read at max and burn at 50% of what they're capable of!

I can't comment much on your first issue but perhaps Nero 7 could increase the read and therefore rip speed of your drive. Just a thought and you don't have to go messing with BIOS settings.

the bios should already be enabled from the factory. check ur settings by going to my computer, right click, then select hardware, then device manager, then hardware , ide controller then right clck on device and clik on advanced settings. this should tellu if dma is on or not. here are a few links for u ... http://sniptools.com/tipstricks/getting-back-to-dma-mode-in-windows-xp ... http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking%20DMA.pdf

There are many things you can do to speed up your times, here is just a short list.

1) defrag your HDD
2) do a disc clean up
3) run a virus, adware scan
4) Use a registry cleaner
5) Shut down your firewall and antivirus programes
6) Turn off all themes (wallpapers,screensavers etc..etc..)
7) adjust your performance settings / or turn it off
8) remove unwanted programs
9) Remove dust from your HSF and whole system
10) leave the pc alone untill transcoding has finished (that includes the internet)

Things to do if you know what you are doing:

1) disable time (the clock)
2) disable system restore
3) disable help and support
4) disable automatic updates
5) disable remote asistance
6) disable windows firewall
7) disable print spooler (only if you do not have a printer)

From what I've read some of the newer burners/rom drives have a riplock on them.

Google your "burner model and riplock", you should come up with a firmware to unlock. Of course, this is unofficial firmware and could possibly void your warranty.

Riplock:

DVD burners will always read a DVD slower then a DVDROM will. Riplock will increase DVD-RW drive read capabalities but nothing to write home about. Riplock was more intended to be used with DVDROMs.. Also, from what I recall, Riplock works best on already backedup copies ie DVD-R/+R, DVD+RW/-RW backups.. Retial (pressed commerical DVDs) will read faster too
