VirtualDub and deinterlace...something doesn't seem right...

I just ripped the .vob files for The Matrix and I encoded them with DVD2AVI and when I did that it interlaced the picture, so when i played it the picture was messed up, then i read in the guides in afterdawn and it said to deinterlace the picture with VirtualDub and to deinterlace it with the "Blend Fields Together". So i did, but when i viewed the file the picture looked blurry, so i went back to afterdawn guide and read more into it and it said that some people expirenced problems with some versions of VirtualDub. So what i'm wondering is if there is a newer version of VirtualDub, besides the one that just came out, or if i should download an older version, or if i should download a different program that is like VirtualDub?
