I just paid for a year of xbox live on my original xbox but i tried to softmod it and i cant get to my dashboard... but thats not the point. im buying an xbox360 and was wondering if i could transfer my account from my original xbox to my xbox360 without using the original xbox dashboard

You can account recover it on your Xbox 360. Aslong as it has been an account for atleast two months.
