Could someone please explain how this thing works? I'm thinking about buying it, but don't want to waste my money if it doesn't work correctly.

1. Once I buy it, what do I have to do in order to play backups?
2. Do I need to flash it with firmware? If so, do I still need to hook it up to the PC in order to flash it, please explain?
