Like ps2mence said the taiwan made dvds are just as good and the only ones that I send that are made in japan in best buy are 16x and they come in a fiftypack for like 40 bucks and I don't recommend using the 16x. What I recommen is using the sonys but dvd-r's 8x the work great.

Not really. Taiyo Yuden's are far superior to Sony's own Media. I've seen mixed reviews of Sony media, the slims to be okay with it, older PS2's, not so much. Verbatim media is the exception the Japan rule. Most all Verb's are Made in Taiwan are very good quality media. For best results, pick some 8x Verbatim's or Taiyo Yuden's.
86. Q. Where can I find good deals on legit Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatim's?
A. http://www.supermediastore.com Great List of Merchants locally, online, in the U.K., etc:

Same principle applies, pick up some 8x Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden DVD+R's. I only backup games to Yuden000T02 nowadays, never had a coaster for Xbox/PS2 because of the media.

Not specifically, no. Just tell her to check chain stores in Queens. 50 packs of Taiyo Yuden will have an octogonal spacer (piece of stryofoam) on top of the package.
It'll look like that, except the piece of stryofoam on top will be octogonal for TY's, circular for Sony's. Tell her to make sure it says Made in Japan on the label, and the spacer is an octogon.

It's a little piece of styrofoam on top of the stack of DVD's that's 8 sided, and shaped like a stop sign.

@ Tokijin
I don't understand why you say that TY's are far superior to Sony's. Don't get me wrong, I love TY and I use them all the time, they're great. However, I also use Sony and they code-up the same as the TY's. I would think that if the have the same manufact, then they should be comparible in quality. Just my two cents.

your sony's coded out to TY because they were made in japan, but if you get the ones that are made in taiwan they will code out as sony's media.

You answered your own question, they're not the same media. Some people swear by Sony Media. I think it's decent for movie backups, but not as reliable as TY's. People will always come and argue the value of quality media, that will happen til the end of time. I know that's not what your doing, just making a general observation about the forums. Jok3r hit the nail on the head. If I harp on TY's, it's because I deal with so many threads where boot failures are obviously being cause by cruddy media. I have a v.4 PS2 that's 5 years old with the original laser, so I have to baby it if I want it to live. TY's have never steered me wrong, I burn at 8x on 8x media, used to think that was taboo, but my 8x scans are almost identical to my 4x scans. That is only recommended on quality media. Sorry for the rant.

No rant seen, I love TY's, too. Although I'm not sure I got across what I was trying to say. Just that they (TY's and Jap Sony) are both made by TY. So they're both the same disc with a different label on it. That's all, no biggie. I hear you on trying to baby your PS2, mine is about that old as well. But hey, it works, right? I'm inspired that you burn at 8x, I've always been too scared to try it, maybe I should.

I was the same way for a long time. If your burner is newer and your using quality TY's or Verb's, you should be okay. I was afraid to try it for a long time, even with advice from media experts, but I did, same great results on Yuden000T02, never looked back.

Sounds good, you shouldn't have any problems with any of those discs.
