Dumping and Running ISOs of the Memory Stick

Index
Step 1: Downloading the homebrew/apps and installing them.
Step 2: Dumping a UMD
Step 3: Rejoining ISO Files
Step 4: Compressing the ISO for use in Devhook
Step 5: Loading the game with Devhook

Tools needed:
1) Fastloader v0.7 - Download
2) Devhook v0.46 - Download (I'm using ChaosZero's Ultimate installer for this to streamline the process).
3) PSP ISO Compressor v1.1 - Download

Step 1: Downloading the homebrew/apps and installing them.

FASTLOADER (homebrew)

Let's start with getting to know Fastloader and all it's glory. Fastloader is a UMD Dumper/Loader, no one uses it as a loader anymore so we'll just pretend it is just for Dumping. This program has the ability to dump all the data on a UMD disc to your memory stick, in either a full single file or in multiple parts. I will go through both process for everyone's sake.

Fastloader comes with multiple folders (ISO, ISOMISC, ISOSPLIT, FASTLOADER & FASTLOADER%) Below is the tree structure where they should be placed. Pictures: [root][game] (right click -> Open in New Window)

ms0:/ (root) This is the Root of your memory stick (x:\ or ms0:/)
|
ISO root dir
|
ISOMISC root dir
|
ISOSPLIT root dir
|
PSP ->GAME
|
FASTLOADER This goes in your GAME dir. This is where you run your homebrew eboots.
|
FASTLOADER% Same as above.

When you start up your PSP you'll notice some Corrupted Data, you can use Sei PSP Tool v0.5b to hide this corruption or install Custom Firmware to hide Currupted Icons. I wont go into Custom firmware right now.

DEVHOOK (homebrew)

Devhook is the latest and greatest homebrew for running your ISO files and UMD discs. It has the ability to emulate Firmware 2.71 and all the features that come with it, like AVC video playback, Web Browser, Playing UMD's that require any firmware...etc. Devhook also has the ability to run CSO compress ISO files, this is just like DAX format you see with DAX ZISO. Just to point out Devhook DOES NOT run DAX format ISO files, just ISO and CSO.

ChaosZero Devhook Ultimate installer is very straight forward, so there is no need for me to explain the installation.

PSP ISO COMPRESSOR (PC app)

This is a handy tool that you can use to compress your ISO's into DAX or CSO and vise versa. Again we used to do this by command line (i still do). Extract the contents to a empty folder.

Step 2: Dumping a UMD

First you need to know how much space you have on your memory stick.

http://www3.telus.net/public/rbloch/psphacks/1.jpg

As you can see I have 1906mb available. This is enough for any UMD because a UMD only holds 1.8GB max, and most games don't go near that size. Of course you'll have to split the files up if you dont have enough space for the game.

Put your UMD game in the drive and load up Fastloader. You will see 2 options "Start Inserted UMD" & "Dump Inserted UMD!". Go to "Dump Inserted UMD!" and hit the X button. The next screen is just a joke, so don't worry. You'll be sent to a screen where it tells you how much space the UMD is and X to start Dumping. I used Socom to dump. Socom is 560168960 bytes, you just have to worry about the first 3 numbers. This tells me it is 560mb, which is smaller than my 1906mb free.

By hitting Left or Right you can change the size of the file splitting (10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800). You'll also see how many parts it will break it up to.

After you have chosen whether or not to split the ISO, hit the X button to start Dumping. Fastloader will autopause if you chose to split the files. When it Pauses you can hit the Triangle button to activate USB, the Split files will be in ISOSPLIT named "My latest dump (Part 1)". Move it to a folder on your computer. Press the triangle again to deactivate USB, then press the Square button to resume dumping. Do it again for Part 2, Part 3...etc

When Fastloader Finishes the Dump you'll be sent back to the Dump screen again. To exit Fastloader press L+R+Home.

You now have a Dump. Whether it is 3 files of 200mb or 1 file of 560mb, you have the game.

-!*NOTES*!-

1) Fastloader does not add the extention .iso on the file, you must do that manually for it to be recognised as an ISO. Just add ".iso" on the end.

2) WinRAR associates itself with ISO files by default, so you may think it's an RAR file. To Un-associate it from an ISO:
a) Open WinRAR
b) Options -> Settings... -> Integration (tab).
c) under "Associate WinRAR with", make sure ISO is Unchecked.
d) Click ok
Now you dont have to worry if it's an rar or an ISO.

Step 3: Rejoining ISO Files

If you decided to split the dump you need to rejoin the files into 1 ISO image. Go to the Directory with your split files, rename them 1.iso, 2.iso, 3.iso...etc. Go to command prompt (start -> run "cmd"), and go to your directory where you saved your ISO files. Type "copy /b 1.iso+2.iso+3.iso final.iso", or however many split files you have dumped.

You now have a single ISO file named final.iso, so you can go ahead and delete the splits parts. You can also rename it to whatever the game is called, just keep it short and sweet...long names just cause trouble.

Step 4: Compressing the ISO for use in Devhook

Now we get to make the ISO file smaller by compressing it using PSP ISO Compressor. I will go through the Utility way.

PSP ISO Compressor steps:

a) Load PSP ISO Compressor v1.1
b) Under Select compressed ISO Format choose ISO -> CSO.
c) Click the three ... to the right of Select origional ISO Image, find the ISO we just made and hit open.
d) Choose you Compression level (1-9), the higher the number the more compression will be used. Some games experience "Lag" when compressed. If you experience lag, lower the compression level. Some games can't be compressed period. (GTA:LCS)

e) By default it will save it in the same directory with the same name but with a .CSO on the end instead of .ISO.
f) Hit the Compress Button and it will compress using cmd prompt.

You now have a Compressed ISO image that can run in Devhook.

-!*NOTES*!-

Command Prompt CiSO commands:
Compressing - ciso X NAME.iso NAME.cso (X=Compression Level 1 - 9)
Decompressing - ciso 0 NAME.cso Name.iso

Step 5: Loading the game with Devhook v0.46/v0.45/v0.44

Turn your PSP on and enter USB mode. Now take that xxxxxxxx.cso file you just compressed and put it in the ISO dir at the root of your memory stick. Exit USB mode and boot up devhook from the Game -> Memory Stick. You'll come to a black screen (For devhook v0.45/v0.44 you will need to hit the O button once you get to the main screen to stop the autoload). and you will see a menu. Enter these options:

Devhook v0.46

UMD SELECT --> xxxxxxxxxx.iso or xxxxxxxxxx.cso NOT xxxxxxxxxx.dax (Select your game ISO/CSO)
FIRMWARE --> 2.71
CPU CLOCK --> 333MHz/166MHz
BOOT SELECT --> Reboot XMB

Devhook v0.45/v0.44

UMD SELECT --> xxxxxxxxxx.iso or xxxxxxxxxx.cso NOT xxxxxxxxxx.dax (Select your game ISO/CSO)
UMD MOUNT --> iso anyumd
UMD VERSION --> 2.xx -> 2.00
FIRMWARE --> 2.71
CPU CLOCK --> 222MHz/111MHz
BOOT SELECT --> Reboot XMB

Hit your O button on START. (in the menu)

You're PSP will reboot to firmware 2.71. Put in any UMD disc you have, though it cannot be a movie UMD, it must be either a game or sampler UMD. Go to Game and look for the UMD Game icon. That is your ISO game being emulated.

Congrats you have a working backup of your game.

I hope this has helped some people in learning more about dumping a umd and loading it. I will probably revise it a little due to the fact i just ran through it, probably give it some more pictures n crap.

How to Install 1.50 Homebrew for NOOBZ!

Well congrats on your 1.5, it?s by far the best firmware because you can do a lot of awesome stuff with it. The first things you should try are basic homebrew games, and then you can move on to more complicated stuff. Homebrew games are games made by coders and programmers. They are basic but some are very fun.

Before you start downloading stuff you should get WinRAR from www.rarlabs.com, it?s like WinZIP. Many files you download will be in .rar format which WinZIP doesn?t support. Also get SeiPSPtool from here: http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/110 Its a very useful tool, go ahead and extract it somewhere convenient, there will be a file inside called SiePSPtool.exe, I recommend you make a shortcut to this on your desktop because you will use it a lot..

Since Sony started trying to block homebrew, for 1.5 there needs to be two folders with an ?eboot.pbp? file in each one. (Eboot.pbp files are the files that the PSP reads, kind of like an .exe program for PC) Now this sounds complicated but it really isn?t. It?s much harder for 2.0 and up because of the further developments Sony has made to block stuff.

I?ll start off with homebrew games because they are the most simple.

Homebrew Games:

rRootage:
http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/261
rRootage is a shooter game, once you get the hang of it, its very addictive. rRootage already comes ready to run on your PSP so it?s very simple. When you get the file you open it with WinRAR then go to the folder that says 1.5 inside the rRootage_PSP 1.4 folder, there should be two folders in there one should say rRootage and the other rRootage%. The folder with the % is the dummy folder that the PSP loads and the folder without is the real folder that contains the real data. You put both of these files in the GAME folder in your PSP folder on your memory stick. Now the program is ready to run and you can play it but it will show the icon for the game in your game menu along with a ?corrupt data? icon. Now this icon isn?t really corrupt (you need this icon ? DO NOT DELETE IT) but it is pretty annoying. Run seiPSPtool and click on the button in the menu on the left that says ?corrupt icon? make sure your PSP is connected and that rRootage and rRootage% are in the GAME folder, make sure your PSP's drive letter is selected in the box that says ?PSP device? then type in ?rRootage? in the box that says ?Folder name? then click ?rename?. This automatically renames the folders of the program so that the corrupt icon does not show up in the menu. You can use this method for any program for your PSP to hide the corrupt icon, just type in the name of the program instead of ?rRootage?.
Now the two folders in your PSP should look something like:
?rRootage _? and ?rroota~1%? They look confusing but the file with the % is still the dummy folder and the one without is the real data folder.

Supertux:
http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/205
Supertux is a Mario like game. It is set up just like rRootage, just open it with WinRAR, open the folder that says Supertux, 1.5, then there are the two folders you put in the game folder (?Supertux? :Supertux%?) put those in your GAME folder then rename them with seiPSPtool to hide the corrupt icon. It?s pretty easy so far.

Metroid Planets:
http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/251
It?s a Metroid game. Just like the others put the two folders in the GAME folder, rename them with seiPSPtool.

Laserix2:
http://dl.qj.net/Laserix-2-for-PSP-Gami ? /catid/195
It?s a puzzle game. Copy to game, run seiPSPtool.

Zorblocks:
http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/293
It?s a puzzle game. Install it same as the others except this one is already renamed to hide the corrupt icon so all you have to do is put it in the game folder.

There are plenty of other homebrew games; those are just some games I felt you should try, and a good way to start with PSP homebrew.

Now I?ll move on to emulators. They are basically the same as homebrew games.

Emulators:

NesterJ (Nintendo)
http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/364
This is the first file that isn?t already in two files, ready to run on your PSP that I have told you about. This one is a little different. This time create a new folder (call it anything but it should probably be NesterJ since that is the name of the program). Put that folder somewhere convenient on your PC where you know where it is, then extract all the files from the NesterJ file you download into the folder you just created. Now run seiPSPtool but instead of clicking the corrupt icon you usually click on, you?re going to leave it on the first screen that pops up (the green icon that says export eboot). This is where you convert the unpatched ?eboot.pbp? file into the two files to run on 1.5. First make sure your PSP is connected to your PC. In this case type NesterJ where it says ?name?, then where it says PBP file, click the button next to it that says ??? then click ?whole folder? and select the folder you just created and extracted the files to. Make sure your PSP?s drive letter is selected where it says ?PSP unit?, check the box that says ?Hide corrupted image?? Then finally click ?Generate? and ?Export to 1.5 PSP?. That creates the two folders, and hides the corrupt icon for you. You also use this method for any other program.

RIN (game boy)
http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/333
You do this the same as NesterJ, extract the files to a folder on your PC called RIN, run seiPSPtool, type RIN, select the whole folder RIN, click ?Hide corrupted??, Generate, export to 1.5 PSP. Put the game boy ROMs in the folder without the %.

SnesPSP_TYL (Super Nintendo)
http://www.psp-hacks.com/file/488
This one is already in two folders, open it with WinRAR and go to the folder that says Kxploit_Ready, inside is snes9xTYL and snes9xTYL%, put those in the game folder and rename them with seiPSPtool like you did with the homebrew games. As usual put ROMs in the folder without the %.

These are just some of the emulators you can run for PSP.

Now of course since you have the emulator running you need to get some ROMs (games for the emulator) to run on it, just Google search for them.

If you recently bought a psp first check witch version it has.
You can check this by doing the following: go to settings. go to system settings than go to system information. Check your system firmware. It is important to know what firmware you have.

2
If it is saying 1.5 than move to number 4
If it is saying 1.51 or 1.52 than update to 2.0.You can find the update 2.0here for US systems or japans psp. It doesnt matter only the 0 and the x functions are switched

For jap systems download the 2.0 update
here
Place the update on your memory stick in X:PSP/GAME/UPDATE do not forget caps lock(if the folder isnt already there make it)

If it is saying 2.00 than move to number 3 or if you wish to play homebrew on 2.0 move to 5

3
once you have updated to 2.0 (or if it already was) you can
downgrade it to 1.5. this will let you be able to running homebrew
NOW WATCH WHERE YOU GET THIS FILE OFF IT MIGHT CONTAINS A
PSP VIRUS THAT WILL BRICK YOUR PSP.becuase of this antivirus
programs thinks that this is a virus. disable your antivirus program
and than download the downgrade and the 1.5 update wich is need
to downgrade. the best is getting it of here (MPH DOWNGRADER) here
the update 1.5 can be found here
follow the mph instructions good. before posting here it doesn't work
- Create a UPDATE folder in PSP/GAME/ folder of your memory stick
- Copy EBOOT.PBP (update 1.50) in UPDATE folder
- Unpack MPHDowngrader.zip
- Copy overflow.tif in your PSP/PHOTO/ folder of your memory stick
- Copy h.bin in root of your memory stick
- Copy index.dat in root of your memory stick
- Plug the AC adaptor

Then, enter in PHOTO MENU, this will launch firmware Version Changer. this will display some letters and numbers on you screen, dont panic this is normal. wait about 30 seconds and than hold the power switch until the psp shuts off. Now turn your psp then go to GAME MENU and launch the 1.50 update.Follow the instructions when the update is at 99% the psp will give an error. This is normal just press ok and turn off your psp, now boot it up again its will give you a blue screen, just press o and wait until the psp is restart.Welcome to the world of homebrew!
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f369/discyer/n3.gif

thanks to some delevopers you can now also downgrade your 2,5 and 2,6. you can get it here http://dl.qj.net/click.php?pid=122&fid=8566 here is how

1. Copy the folder the DOWNGRADER/2.50/DOWNDATERTEST if you have 2.50 or DOWNGRADER/2.60/DOWNDATERTEST if you have 2.60 to /PSP/GAME/ in your memstick
2. Wait someone with 1.50 to pass you a folder called DOWNDATER and copy it to the root of your memstick.
3. launch GTA and the eLoader
4. Connect your psp to the AC adaptor
5. In the eLoader menu, choose the downdater test. WARNING: the program won't output any display and any warnings, it will start the downgrader process immediately.
6. You'll see the your memstick flashing. That means that your psp is being flashed from the memstick.
7. You won't see any type of output in the screen (this is for safety). When the memstick finishes flashing, the psp should reinit and you'll have probably a 1.50.
8. It will probably say you "Cannot read disc". Don't worry about that, this is because the UMD device has not been reset properly. Simply restart the psp manually or take and the battery for 5-10 minutes and the problem will be solved.
9. That's all. If all went right, you'll have 1.50. If it went less good, you'll still have 2.50/2.60. If all went wrong, you'll have a bricked psp (except in the case you have the modchip) Remember that you have accepted that risk.
10. If your PSP is showing up as v2.01 use Wab Version Changer and change it to v1.50.

look at this guide over here its made by POWER and its a very nice guide for the downgrader! http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=17935

4
Now that you have downgraded you can use homebrew.
there are alot homebrews and you can find them all here http://www.psp-hacks.com/category/7
to use homebrew you first must make it 1.5 ready (most homebrew are already 1.5 ready) .
i use sei tool(but there are some others to). I use this one because it can hide the corrupted icons from the screen. you can get it here http://www.psp-hacks.com/download.php?id=110

once you have "patched'' your homebrew you can put it on your psp.
put both folders on X:PSP/GAME/

5
Since 2.0 is hacked you are able to play some homebrew.not all homebrews will work because the psp is not using his kernal mode (this is because the loader works trough the photo menu).this is need for iso loaders so on 2.0 you cant run iso's.you can get the loader here http://www.psp-hacks.com/download.php?id=93
read the instructions carefully before posting something on the forums.

6
the best iso loader at the moment is DAX ZISO Loader v0.62 wich you can get here. This loader can run compressed iso wich means you can put more iso's on you memory stick..
this loader has got many emulation modes, these modes are needed for running the newest psp games on a 1.5 psp. here is a list of the emulation modes with some information
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Off: this method is only good if you want to emulate the flash files ( this is the same as a firmware loader )
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
System menu. if you use this method it will exit the emulator letting you to load the game through the system
menu or another loader like mphgameloader. This is one of the most compatible modes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Direct load. It will directly load your iso. this is a method wich is not as good as the others and you will see that many new games wont load with this method
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Copy load. It will copy the game boot.bin file to ms0:/DAXZISO/DBOOT.BIN and it will
load-exec it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MPHGL Direct.
It seems to be the less compatible mode of all. It's more compatible to use the system menu one and execute mphgameloader, or the modes "MPHGL System", "MPHGL VSHExec" and "MPHGL LoadExec".
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UMDEmulator:
This mode requires the file ms0:/DAXZISO/UMDEMU.PBP, which is already included.
This mode will load the original umdemulator letting it to load isos in dax format.
The compatibility of different load modes inside UMDEMULATOR should be more or less the
same that those from DAXZISO, although it may have some differences.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MPHGL System.
This mode returns to the system menu: in that moment you can run
your emulated umd from the system menu. Instead of executing the disc, the firmware will
execute the file "ms0:/DAXZISO/MPHGL.PBP" which will load your 2.XX game.
The required file "ms0:/DAXZISO/MPHGL.PBP" is already included.
The compatibility of this mode is greater than "MPHGL Direct" and exactly the same than
exiting to the system menu and then running mphgl.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MPHGL VSHExec.
With this mode your psp will reboot and after that it will auomatically
run MPHGameLoader ("ms0:/DAXZISO/MPHGL.PBP").The compatibility of this mode is greater than "MPHGL Direct" and exactly the same than exiting to the system menu and then running mphgl.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Direct LoadExec.
This mode looks like "Direct Load", but instead of using the
sceKernelLoad/StartModule functions, it uses sceKernelLoadExec; because of that, the system
will have more free memory, and this makes it more compatible than "Direct Load" and almost
as compatible as "System Menu". The only problem is that it always will run the BOOT.BIN
file (even if that option is in off), because sceKernelLoadExec fails with EBOOT.BIN.
If you have one of those game that in umdemulator only worked with copy load, try this one,
it loads faster and there are chances that it work.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MPHGL LoadExec.
This mode is as compatible as "MPHGL System" and
MPHGL VSH Exec, but it loads faster. However it has a problem: it doesn't work depending
on the wlan switch position. In my psp, it works with the wlan position in on, but it may be
different on your psp, or even different from a game to another.
This is NOT a DAXZISO bug. I've tried to execute the mphgl eboot.pbp with other homebrews
programs that also use the sceKernelLoadExec function, and without iso emulation (original
umd), and the results where the same: depending on the wlan switch position it worked or not.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RUNUMD LoadExec.
This mode will run RUNUMD, and it will let you load isos with it.
Because of a special patch that is applied in this mode to the UMDEMULATOR core to fix a
compatibility issue with RUNUMD, the flash0 and flash1 emulation are broken in this mode.
This mode requires the runumd pbp (folder without %) to be in ms0:/DAXZISO/RUNUMD.PBP
This file is NOT included, you'll have to provide it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RUNUMD System. This mode returns to the system menu. After that, you can run RUNUMD
with the disc icon of the firmware. You can also start runumd from the your memory stick if
you want. This mode also requires the file ms0:/DAXZISO/RUNUMD.PBP and it also has the flash
emulation broken.
Note: if you use one of the other "System Menu" modes and you start runumd, it will gives
you the famous error of "patcher failed", because daxziso doesn't apply the special patch
to those modes in order to keep compatibility with flash emulation.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RUNUMD Direct. This mode is like "RUNUMD LoadExec", but it doesn't reboot the firmware, so
it loads faster and it doesn't delete a background program from memory. The compatibility
should be less than "RUNUMD LoadExec", although it seems still to be very good.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ANother ISO loading method that is very good is DevHook. This great app will emulate firmware 2.5 PERFECTLY and allow you to run ISOs and UMDs that require 2.5. It is also possible to play ISOs that require 2.6 with theis method. Some good links with great info on DevHook and all you need to know to use it:

if you have an 1.5 psp but you liked the features of the other firmwares than can use a firmware launcher.
with this launcher you can launch any firmware you like wich are 1.51 1.52 2.0, 2.1, 2.5, 2.6. you can NOT play games with these firmware loader. but you can use there video codes and you can test things like personal game boot movie. You can get it here http://files.pspupdates.qj.net/cgi-bin/ ? ,0,40,1838
.

8
as you might know you can put video's on you psp but you need to convert it to mp4 format. you can do this with a hundreds of programs. but the one wich is most use is PSP VIDEO 9 wich you can get from here http://files.pspupdates.qj.net/cgi-bin/ ? ,0,18,1657
the first thing you need to do is to install the program psp video 9.
while it is installing you can make an folder on you psp.this is need to put in the video's.make the folder with the name MP_ROOT in this folder you make another folder called 100MNV01.now you that you have installed you program launch it. you see that the program ask wich drive name you psp has.now select the psp drive and press ok. now you can begin to convert. there are many options for you. all these options have different quallity making your movie bigger or smaller .choose one you like and convert it.
thats it

sorry guys this will not be sticky
a better one is already stickied

EDIT
i see now where you're going, ok this has possibilty for a sticky
do we really need the game list? its too long newbies will not read it!
a guide with all the links of evrything you'll need about psp homebrew would be very efficient especially to newcomers.

You probably did. A lot of theses guides are from the PSP-hacks forums, but I put the actual authors name at the end and the location of the guide.
