I recently purchased a BenQ DW1655 Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer - Black w/ LightScribe because the external DVD burner I got was burning very very slow.

I purchased the Ben-Q for around $32.99 it sounded like a great deal. Although I was wondering which was better. The one I purchased or the Lite-On SHM-165H6S Dual Layer DVD±RW Writer, and why which one is better.

Thanks.

Another question of mine is will I be able to back up my XBOX360 games using this drive? From what I have read XBOX360 games need to be burned in DVD-RAM format, and I do not believe the Ben-Q drive I purchased burns in that format.

XBOX 360 games need to be burned on DVD+RL medias and NOT on DVD-RAM.The benq 1655 does read and write DVD±DL medias.

About Benq and Lite-on drives, both drives are very good drives, they are among the best three drives on the market. There's a lot of good reviews from members here in AD about the 1655.You'll see if you take time to read some specific threads and posts.I myself own one brand new benq 1650(still in box) which is identical to the 1655 but with no lightscribe capability.

You won't get disappointed by the 1655.But only one thing i've noticed is that xbox 360 users(from the 360 forum here in AD) say that their 360 prefer backups made on pioneer drive 111 and they advise to use Verbatim DVD+R DL for best result. But i don't know about the 1655 now,you can give it a try and you'll see.But for backing up movies, data and any other things, that's the best you can get in terms of quality and price.

Thanks for the quick response TY4ever. So it sounds like a bought a good DVD burner then. Although the statement you made,

I do not believe is correct after reading the Product specs on Pricegrabber and other sites it states that it burns DVD DL discs

DVD Speed
DVD-ROM Read Speed: 16 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD+R Speed: 16 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD-R Speed: 16 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD+RW Speed: 8 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD-RW Speed: 6 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD+R DL Speed: 8 X (DVD, DVD-R)
DVD-R DL Speed: 4 X (DVD, DVD-R)

Is that right

Do you mean that the above quote(which is yours) is right and that xbox360 games are on DVD-Ram format? If it's this you've heard i can assure you that the source is really really fake.Just have a glance at the 360 forum here at AD itself and you'll notice that every 360 owner talks about backing up up their games on DVD±R DL and nott DVD-RAM.

And i never said it doesn't burn DL medias.Have a better look at my previous post or here.

I think you did not understand me well on my first reply to you,but that's ok.It good to know that you got yourself a very good burner.

Here's a link about the xbox360 forum. It will be very helpful for you as you do own the 360 and you're gonna make back ups of your games.Just notice that it says that you need DVD±DL(Dual Layers) medias in the very first post.
