howdy, i have been trying for days now to connect the 360 to my pc. i believe that i have managed to get really close. all connections are there except the last one, the computer when running the test. i even manged to get the 360 into media center mode, it has media center written in the middle of a black screen with contacting written below. i run the setup on the pc and fill in the numbers then its says that it cant be connected, and that it could be a problem with firewalls. i have turned of nortons and windows firewalls so i cant see how they can still affect it. every couple of hours i manage to get that little bit closer, but im soon going to give up. microsoft make out that its easy. im starting to doubt that it is even possible. im simple using the ethernet cable which should be simple. any help would be appreciated

its impossible to get the black screen before you put the 8 digits in your computer... what im guessing is happening, xbox 360 is trying to connect to media center with a connection you previously tried to set up for media center, now your pc is tryign to make a new connection...

what to do.

run media center on xbox 360 and hit Y to make a new connection
this will giv eyou another 8 digit number on your 360. now stay at that screen....

load the xtender software again to initiate the 360 setup and punch in the 8 digit number.

go to the dashboard now on your xbox and let the pc set it up... you should now be able to complete the setup

soon as i enter media center on the xbox it goes straight into the black screen with media center in the centre. i had already entered the number into the computer, it says that there is a problem with the network or firewalls but i have turned off all firewalls and there doesnt seem to be a problem with the network.
when i test media network i get:
network adapter wired
ip address confirmed
pc selected failed

unplug the xbox from the network and try to connect to media center ... it will fail, then push y and you will get a new 8 digit number, plug it back into your network, and run the setup on ur computer.

connect your xbox to your network, but turn off the computer with media center... now it wont find the computer, then push Y to add a new connection, get the 8 digit number then go to dashboard... now turn on media center PC and put in the 8 digit number

hi i have managed to get a new number, but the same thing happens after entering the number it says that there is no 360 on the network or a problem with firewalls. but i have turned them off.
the 360 shows up in media center extender but its status is not connected. and it is present in windows media connect.

okay, so its not an issue with your software then.. are you on a router? do you have the proper ports open?

unfortunately i dont really know what that means. i have literally been using trial an error to get this far. which why im so annoyed as ive got so far. its ays n the 360 to check if the ports are opened. i thought by turning off firewall that would solve it, i have a feeling that it is something to to do with the network i set up

I actually had this exact same problem. The only difference was I was using McAfee. It wasn't sufficient to just disable my firewall, I had to completely uninstall one part of it to get the 360 to connect to my computer.

You've probably already visited this page
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/extender/setup/def...

There was an excellent guide on the XBOX forums that I followed when I got frustrated, I'll see if I can find the link to it.

If you are using mcafee, you have to go into the mcafee permissions and allow the box to access your pc or it will not load.

Actually, I had to uninstall the Privacy Service portion of the McAfee suite for it to work. Doesn't seem like too much of a loss.

Anyway, I ran through the following from beginning to end and it worked for me right away (after a week of messing around without a true guide).
