but no why. None of your explinations explain why a low-quality dvd can burn out a ps2's lazer. Or how long. Also, how long does it take dvds to deteriorate? Is life of a DVD the reason this forum's stickys are ALL about how I should be using Tak-blah blah or V-something? What's wrong with the 100-pack of Memorexes I just bought at BB for 30 smackeroons? If the disks are going to kill my laser, who cares if the PS2 only ends up working for a year or two? By then, they'll be cheap. Does the quality of the burner matter? What's more important, the burner or the DVDs? What if I don't want to order some wierd HQ disks off the internet and I'd rather know which brands at my local electronics store are the best quality? Sure burns cause problems in quality, but what about general bumps and pressure that befalls the top or bottom of the DVD? All this shaz about DVD quality and PS2 games, but does this apply to data as well? Does Book-whatever apply to both DVD-R and DVD+R? Is it really that important? What about that DMA?
Your stickes answer operational questions, but where is the why Afterdawn members?
Ok ok. So I ran that Nero quality test. On Katamari 1. Burnt at 4x in my friend's samsung burner.
40 quality huh? I was reading a topic with this proggy in it and people seemed to be satified with 95 and up. Game works flawlessly.
Last 2 months I've been using SM3.8 on my slim and the first game I got was IIDX RED which is alot like DDR. So when I got it, it was apparently an inferior burn. When starting a song, it occasionally would hang. My friend can reburn this game for me at any time, but I was ok with some load times. Today, the game's bgvideos would freeze, but songs would continue normally. One song dropped audio. None of this bothers me, I can reburn. Besides, I could run the Nero test and see a bajillion errors, right?
For the same price as those Memorex, you can get Taiyo Yuden's for the same price with free shipping? DVD-R-100.html" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-4x-DVD-R-100.html
Yes I'm aware that link doesn't appear correctly, unfortunately supermediastore.com's links don't appear correctly on AD.
Here's a ton of good deals on TY's: DVD-R-silver-thermal.html" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.meritline.com/taiyo-yuden-8x-DVD-R-silver-thermal.html
You ask a lot of questions, and I won't be bothered answering them all. I'll have a go at the core ones though.

Is there empirical evidence that long term use of low grade media will destroy your PS2? No. If there's a study like that somewhere, I'd love to see it. The reasoning behind using quality media comes from burn gurus, modders, and personal experience.

Why not use Memorex or CMC Mag? Because there's plenty of empirical evidence over 10,000's of burns that they produce a higher coaster rate and more playback issues than quality media. If you're on these boards daily, you know how important quality media is. Most all boot failure threads can directly be attributed to quality media. How many PS2 backups have you successfully booted on Memorex? I've booted 300+ on Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim with zero coasters.

Because all signs point to that if you take care of your PS2, clean the laser regularly, and use quality media, that won't happen. I have a v.4 PS2 that's 5 years old with the original laser, boots games as fast as a v.9, backups or originals.

If you've read at all about CD-DVD Speed, you'd know it's a benchmark, nothing more. A good score isn't a guarantee of no playback issues, and vice versa with a low score. No serious burner I know gives much credence to benchmarks, it's all about playback. CD-DVD Speed scores should always be taken with a grain of salt.
Lastly, either your post is out of genuine curiosity or you're trying to incite people by challenging widely held beliefs for successful burning. If I had to guess, I'd say the latter. I'll let people draw their own conclusions about that.
In what sense? If you use backups with your PS2 you're always going to put more strain on it than with originals. With quality media, you can limit that strain. My PS2 loads TY's and Verb's with ease. The way I see it, if you pay $115 for a modchip, why would you not replace the laser when it goes? That would seem assnine to me. But that's my opinion. Whether I play my PS2 a ton or not, I'm replacing the laser when it goes for sure.
