Hi Napster,

Which powerbook G3 do you have (Wallstreet, Lombard or Pismo)? How big is your new HD (it needs to be ATA5 compatible). How much RAM do you have installed - for OSX you need as much as your machine can take (I have 512MB)

I upgraded my Powerbook G3 to a G4 about two years ago using a Daystar G4 processor upgrade. I've been running 10.3.9 fine for two years. You have to be careful that your mac doesnt overheat running OSX. Make sure you have a lot of ventilation around the mac or you could fry your cache.

I couldn't get OSX to install on my mac either. And then I discovered that the trick was to remove some of the RAM chips so that there are less than 256MB. Once OSX is installed you just pop the RAM back in again. Also if you are partitioning your HD, the OSX has to be installed in the first 8 GB of the HD.

Have a look at this article: http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-52551.html

If you get OSX working, you may find that DVD player doesnt work (it only works in Classic mode (OS 9.2.2). If that happens, just get VLC. It's a better player, its free and plays a lot more media.

Hope this helps you

ok several things can go wrong with the g3

1. the logic board can fail causing a nice $300.00 bill

2. the cd drive upgrade only works on g3 400 mhz or faster processors

3.the hard drive can only go to 80 gigs before the laptop becomes unstable and causes freezing and lockups sound fimilier

this is why you need os x tiger because alot of these problems where corrected in tiger

I haven't run Tiger on my suped up G3-G4 because Panther is working fine. Try loading Jaguar in the way that I told you, and see if it installs. If you can get it to run, then perhaps you can look into getting Tiger, doing a G4 upgrade as I did, or buying a new powerbook altogether. But since you have already invested in Jaguar, I guess you are not looking to go and buy Tiger for a good while at least. Just be careful of the heat and make sure you have plenty of RAM.

But I see that you are posting on the forums, so you must have some kind of mac running. Is the G3 and old one you have lying around?

Let's see if we can sort this out. I'll need you to tell me a few things:

Which powerbook G3 is it? There were 3 models - Wallstreet (1 - the first thicker one with the black keyboard)), Lombard (2 - a slimmer version of Wallstreet with a bronze keyboard) and Pismo (3 - a faster version of Wallstreet with Firewire)

Write the specs here from the System profiler

How much RAM is installed and which system is running on it at the moment? Is that system working ok?

How big is the HD and how much space is left on it? Would it matter if we wipe it and reinstall a completely new OS? If so, you need to back up all the info on it that you want to keep.

Let's start there and see what we can do...

Ok, so tell me the specs of the machine (see above), and we can try and figure out where it's failing. I suspect it could be a RAM issue.
