Nero shutdown upon avi addition

Ok ya'll, I'm calling upon the collective wisdom again.
In the past I've had problems with NeroVision 2 not wanting to recognize and work with an AVI that I captured from my DV Camera using that utility. I started capturing with Windows Movie Maker and then created a movie and transcoded it using NeroVision but it took way too long to transcode into mpg2 and AC3 (up to 24 hours on my antiquated pc).
I left all of that alone for about 6 months before wanting to take some of our dv tapes and create dvd's for the family. So this time I decided to use a version (4.02) of Cucusoft that was given to me to transcode into mpeg and then TMPGE author to make the movie and VOB files.
Although the speed of Cucusoft is impressive, I can't seem to find anyway to change output preferences, the video quality is not great (if there's camera movement the picture blurs out until the camera is still again), and it will not transcode the audio to AC3.
So I went back to NeroVision after I loaded the latest update.
When I try to add my captured AVI file to a NeroVision movie project to program shuts down completely. Flash... it's gone. No debug messege.. nothing, just back to my desktop.
I rolled back to the version I was using before and the same thing is happening.
Now I was reading about completely removing Nero and cleaning up but I'm afraid I would loose my NeroSoundTrax utlity because I don't have my original Nero software disc and I us Soundtrax quit often.
So I haven't removed.

It doesn't get to the burn stage.
Picture this.
I'm in NeroVision,Make Movie menu
I go to browse and add to project.
I browse to my AVI and click ok to add it to my clipboard
NeroVision flashes off.
Nothing but my desktop left.
It just stops.

I did as you suggested although the clean tool didn't remove everything I suppose. When I installed the versions you recommended, my serial number was still in the setup memory.
Anyway, tried dragging and dropping my AVI file into the project clipboard. That worked but when I went to add to project the same thing happened again.

Did you manage to get a successful burn by dragging and dropping, if so check location given for a Nero log.
Nero 6 history log location: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt

No where near to burn. I got to the same place as last time other than I did a "drag and drop" then "add to project" instead of the "browse and add to project".
Same result though. When I go to add the clip into my movie project the program flashes off and goes to desktop.
Very frustrating.
I wouldn't be going through all of this if I didn't like the quality I got in Nero before, and for the fact that I paid for the mpeg2 plug in, and it encodes in AC3.
