has any one figured out how to make a backup of an origonal without connecting the 360 drive up to the computer again, or downloading the files from the net? i guess the main question is can i back up a game by using my computers dvd drive?

I dont know alot about this stuff but I can tell you that the Computer Drive can't read the Xbox Drive.

well darn, i was hoping by now someone smart would have figured out how to do it. is there any way of just getting an replacement 360 drive and permanetly hooking it up to the computer so i wouldnt have to open up my 360 everytime i wanted to back up a game? i dont see why this wouldnt be possible, other than figuring out a way to power the drive.

I still don't think you can get the security sectors off with the Samsung SH-D162C, which isn't really that big of a deal. Those are pretty easy to come by, and A LOT easier to DL than 7GB of RARs and PAR2s.

no i have not tried what you posted. for some reason the post was not up when i replied to the second post. i am searching it right now though. i seem to be coming up with is either firmware for the samsung drive, or sites in some sort of forgein language. but basically is drive capable of reading 360 games sucessfully?

Yep... with the "right" firmware flash. Although it'll be another week or two until it'll (the firmware) be able to pull out the security sector.
This is just a regular pc dvd rom drive. It's ALOT cheaper than picking up another 360 drive. Although you have that option, too, if $$$ isn't an issue.
Actually, any pc dvd drive can make a backup of your original. BUT it won't be able to read the security sector which you need if you then plan on burning the backup.

so if i wanted to i could just use the dvd rom drive i have right now and get everything onto the hard drive to make a backup minus the SS code, and find that on the net and inject is using lets say ss merger 1.6, and would be able to make a successful backup then? or i can get this samsung drive, and once it gets here the firmware will probably be released and change the dvd drives firmware and be able to pull everything including the SS code to make a successful backup?

I used the swap trick, it involves taking your PC DVD drive cover off, because you need to be able to swap disc without pressing the eject button, involces swapping dvd movie with YOUR 360 original..The only thing I cant get is the SS bin..I have to download that from the net..This is what youll need

DVD Movie over 7.94gb in Size

you dont have to take the cover off. you could just use a paper clip and stick it in the hole on the front of the cover and that will pop the drive open without hitting the eject button.
