Here's why I'm asking for this. Last week I decided it was time to clean up some of the stuff off of my lap top. Things were going well and I was putting programs and such onto cds.

I went and put some files from the windows section of my lap top onto cds and then after they had burned I deleted them. When I went to restart the computer it wouldn't go to my desktop saying that an NTDAT file was missing.

With that I decided to use my restore cds because I couldn't gain access to my desktop. Now a week later I'm trying to get my computer back to the way it was. Basically because of this stupid mistake I lost everything that I had on my lap top. I had programs like Nero and songs which are now completely gone.

I am able to use the internet as you can see but when I go to download updates or programs it keeps telling me that I need Internet Explorer 6. I believed I have the program, but I guess I don't.

I'm also not sure if I'm running on Windows 2000 or Windows XP. I was running on Windows XP before I made that stupid mistake. I am using a Compaq Presairo 700 laptop if that is of any help.

I've tried to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 but the last time I did that I couldn't get internet access. There are times when I also keep getting this shutdown notice because of some program called lsall.exe.

Look, there is no need to blast my head off about what I've done. I've already done plenty of that. I've been kicking myself for doing what I did. I have the files still on cd but I don't think it will help any if I were to put them back onto my lap top.

So if anyone can recommend anything I will be EXTREMELY greatful to you.

The fact that you can still get into Windows is a good sign.

First thing to do is try System File Checker. Go to Start > Run. Type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes). Have your Windows CD ready as it will ask for it. Go get a cup of coffee as it will take awhile to finish. Once it has completed, there will not be any indications that it's done. It just closes out.

Post back and let us know it that helps.

System File Checker does a few things. It checks the version, date and size of critical Windows files. It compares the CD file to the one installed. It will sometimes allow you to pick and chose which file to use.

It does nothing to the registry. Depending on how bad you messed it up, a good registry fix/repair/clean program might have worked. Key word being might!

I've never known anyone that has had corruption and fixed it with a repair install. Most of the time it only fixes very minor problems, if it does that. Generally, it's a waste of time.

Keep my nick handy, in case you need it sometime. :)

Glad to hear your back up and running and so sorry about you loss of files.

Without the Windows CD, it's going to be almost impossible to get the system back to where it should be. Perhaps a good time to switch to Linux?

@billybob
Careful. PM's can me monitored as well as threads.
