Hello,
Okay. Thanks to a very helpful forum member, I am now aware that DVD ripping software (at least DVDx 2.3 and Imtoo DVD Ripper) has trouble encoding at exactly 29.97 frames per second. A movie I was ripping from a DVD, for example, displayed 3hrs 3mins and 44 seconds on the DVD. When ripped to an AVI at 29.97Hz, its duration was 3hrs 3mins and 55 SECONDS. The movie was now longer by 11 seconds. This is because the software did not encode at exactly 29.97Hz but at 30Hz and thus the movie plays slower (approx. 11 seconds slower). What really gets me about all this is that the audio for the movie now has tiny yet audible pauses inserted at given intervals during the duration of the movie in order to keep sync with the video. That extra audio time added with these tiny pauses makes up for the longer-than-its-own-audio video.

My question is either: Is there software that will encode a movie at EXACTLY 29.97Hz and rip a movie from a DVD to an AVI without extending its duration? If not, is there a software that handles this synchronization issue better? For example by duplicating the audio right before where a pause is supposed to be inserted (.030 seconds of the last sound you heard is less detectable than .030 of no audio).
