Hi, I'm having an issue with my Sony DRU-710A (it has the latest firmware update: BYX5) using Nero Premium V.7.0.0.0. When trying to burn the drive isnt acknowleging ANY blank dvd.
I've tried both new and old DVD-RW's as well as new DVD-R's from both Sony and Verbatim. I've burnt 100's of dvds with no issue whatsoever up until the other day. A few days ago it would acknowledge the dvd, but right at the end (I think it was around writing the lead-out) of the burning it would say error...and wouldnt complete the burn, but now it wont even acknowledge the disk at the beginning of the burning process.
I have read a few of the other posts that deal with PMA issues and most seem to revolve around faulty media. As I have said though I have tried a lot of different media and none are being aknowledged. I have also checked my DMA settings and both the primary and secondary IDE's are enabled.
Could this problem be associated with downloading the recent Microsoft security updates? I really havent downloaded any other software that I can think of that would interfere with the burning process.
The only other thing I can think of is a motherboard chipset issue...which I really hope isnt the problem as it looks quite complicated to download new drivers etc.

Hi.
Nero 7.0.0.0 isn't a very good version. Run the Nero 7 Clean Tool and the Nero Driver Clean Tool and then upgrade to Nero 7.0.8.2.

This probably won't solve the problem, but your version of Nero is not a particularly good one.
Does the drive playback DVDs at all?
Does the drive appear in the My Computer window?
Have you tried resetting the burner and IDE Channels as follows:
Try resetting the transfer modes for your IDE devices as follows:
Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Click the Hardware tab.
Click the Device Manager button.
Click the "+" beside DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
Right click on the name of your DVD burner and select Uninstall.
Click OK.
Still in Device Manager:
Click the "+" beside IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
Right click on the Primary Channel and select Uninstall.
Click OK.
Right click on the Secondary Channel and select Uninstall.
Click OK.
Restart the system.

It's a little longer approach to doing the same thing as above but has pictures. :)
Have you tried going back to an OS restore point when everything worked?
I notice you mentioned only -R and -RW type media. Have you tried any +R media?
You might try opening the case and unhooking the cables from the Lite-On CD drive. You could also try changing the IDE cable.
If none of the above works, uninstall the burner and install it in another system and see if it works there. If not, the burner is likely a dead duck.

Thanks for the fast reply Laddyboy. I will try those steps and let you know how it goes. The link you mentioned for the newer version of Nero...is that a demo version? If so will it limited me for how long I can use it for? The Nero 7.0.0.0 I am using now is the full version and I didnt want to unistall this and install a demo version if possible, not sure though if it would make a huge difference.

Its a demo version but if you enter your cdkey, you will have the full version. Do not install your Nero discs and then update. It doesn't work properly. Just download from the link provided. And follow the steps laddyboy said first.

Ok I downloaded the version recommended by Laddyboy and when trying to install it it asks for a serial number. I enter in my previous number and it says error. Any ideas where I can get a serial number for this version?
By the way I follwed all the other steps listed such as uninstalling the IDE drives and DVD drives with no problems. The DVD drive is listed in my computer and also plays both burnt and non-burnt dvds.

Your serial number from 7.0.0.0 should work for 7.0.8.2. Upgrades within versions are free.
Have you tried any +R media?
Did you go back in time to a previous WinXP restore point.
Can you burn ISOs to -R disks with other software like DVD Decrypter or Imgburn?
If you open the My Computer window and insert a blank disk, do you get a small disk icon next to your cursor? Do any other windows or programs open?
You might also try a registry cleaner.
If you install it in another system and it works, you make need to reformat your hard drive and reinstall the OS to cleanup driver conflicts.

I've managed to get the new version of Nero working with the serial so thats atleast one less prob to deal with!
Yes, I've tried +R media and its the same result as -R media.

Yes, the icon does appear for a short moment, however its obvious that its having trouble reading it. I make sure no other programs are open when doing this. When viewed in my computer...it is showing that a dvd is currently in the drive. As I've said it PLAYS both burnt and non-burnt dvds perfectly.
Can you burn ISOs to -R disks with other software like DVD Decrypter or Imgburn?
I havent tried that....havent really worked too much with ISO's even though I do have decrypter installed.
I've also cleaned out the registry and defraged.
I am thinking that it has to be some kind of chipset motherboard issue. I did my best to udate that but am unsure if it worked correctly or not

As far as using ISO files, most DVD/CD authoring software allows for creating an ISO image file as the output. The image file is nothing more than the digital 0/1 represenation of the disks contents after burning. It's essentially the map and what a burning program uses to burn the disk. Nero calls them nrg files. If you're using Nero to create content, just choose the image recorder as the output device rather than the DVD burner. The nrg (ISO) image file generated can be burned by many programs. DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn are two free programs many use.

If you can burn an ISO with either DVD Decrypter, Imgburn, or another program, it would seem Nero is somehow involved and obviously your burner is OK.
One thing I noticed in your log is the absence of any drivers being listed. For example the end of one of my logs shows:

This seems peculiar to say the least but may indeed be the problem. OK on to the last stages of troubleshooting.
Using Device Manager:
Control Panels > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager button
Expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives
Double click on the Sony burner
Click the Driver tab
Click the Driver Details... button
Note the drivers listed and the source, e.g., Sonic, Microsoft, etc.
Is there a PXhelp20.sys driver from Sonic, cdrom.sys driver from Microsoft
Also under the Drivers tab, click the Update Drivers button and allow the wizard to search for drivers from Windows update etc.
If that doesn't solve the problem, we're on to the following.
Shutdown the system. Disconnect/uncable both the Lite-On CD-ROM and the Sony burner and restart the system twice. Shutdown. Recable only the Sony burner. Leave the Lite-On CD-ROM uncabled and thus uninstalled. Restart the system. You should see messages about found new hardware and the device should be identified. See if the burner works now.
If not, physically uninstall the burner and reinstall in another system or place in an external enclosure and plug into another system and see if the burner works. If not, the burner has likely given up the ghost although you could try reflashing the burner firmware to make sure.
If it does indeed work in another system, I would backup any data you want saved from your system, reformat your HDD, and do a fresh reinstall of the OS and applications.

Success...well kind of:)
I followed your steps precisely and the dvd burner is now atleast acknowleding the discs. I've left the cd-rom drive unconnected.
Now...the new problem...
I am getting the error 'could not perform end of disc-at-once'. I've read a couple of other threads regarding this problem and I've once again checked the DMA settings which are fine. I kept the burning speed low also.
I ran the Nero info tool and under ASPI installation is says system ASPI..."ASPI is not installed", but when I 'toggle' to the option of Nero ASPI...it reads "ASPI is installed and working properly". Could this be the source of the problem? If so do I need to download another ASPI client?

Something is chewing up your memory, dont multitask while burning, turn off all unnecessary programs, including spyware.

Despite your firmware being up to date your burner doesnt loke your Ritek discs, try Verbatim or Sony (made in japan)

I agree with Gwendolin that the problem is the burner not recognizing the media and then trying to follow a default write strategy. Once again, the absence of any drivers being listed is odd. It may be the firmware is too old to recognize a new media or it may be the burner malfunctioning or something else like a driver conflict. The Ritek RW media you're using is not an old media however. It could also be this particular RW disk is defective.
The aspi is likely fine. Nero installs its own aspi layer software, Wnaspi32.dll, which is listed at the beginning of your log.
Are you able to burn a -R or +R, not RW, disk now?
If not, install the burner in another system. If it works there, you'll need to reformat your HDD and rebuild your system.
