Odd bootup auto-update thing PLZ HELP

OK heres the gist of it. Had a mate softmod my xbox only to have my dumbarse nephew fiddle with the settings when i wasnt around and deleted EvoX and it changed to a different one. Why there was 2 types other than the M$ one i dont know.
Also after this point i tried to copy to the hard drive, burnout revenge. It tried an auto update but stalled and so after that i didnt really worry bout it as i wasnt too concerned about that game anyway. Since then my mate tried to get the xbox back from the weird dash and onto EvoX again. Deleted the weird dash and such, im not sure, but he knew what he was doing. Then as soon as the xbox tried to reboot i wouldnt work, i believe that the auto update left some commands in the xbox to finish the update.
However this didnt happen until the weird dash was removed and the M$ dash said hold on i need to up date. My mate took it and had a fiddle and so know the hard drive has a fully untainted dash on it but apon booting it tries to connect to xbox live for an update, doesn't connect and just stays at that screen. I dont have an xbox live account and dont use it what so ever.
Have tried borrowing the same game and allowing it to finish the update but it doesnt even try to look at the game only goes to the update screen.
More than a gist really but any suggestions would be great.

Well i dont know how to edit my first post but here is exactly what appears when it boots up
"Xbox live is updating your system. Please do not turn off your Xbox."
ofcoarse i dont have xbox live and so the progress bar doesnt fill and i gt the unable to connect to xbox live try again later message

well first try re-installing the softmod, and if that doesnt work then try just backing up everything to your computer and then deleteing the softomd hope it works

I had this exact problem! There is good news and there is bad news!
But first lets make sure that you are getting the same problem as me! Is your xbox booting straight into a screen with a warning message saying something like "your xbox needs to update" you press ok and the green bar appears. After a few minuites the xbox gives another message saying "Xbox could not connect to xbox live!". BUT when you press okay it just loops!
The good news is that my xbox is in full working order now! The bad ill give to you later if this is your problem!

Thank god someone replied.
Yes thats the problem, i dont get propted to connect it just goes to the bar but i do get the loop when you press ok after the connection failure.

with or without a game it goes to the live thing. tried to put in the game that tried to update in the first place plus others that had it, halo 2 etc, but no love. I even tried AID3 DVD in the vain hope it may over ride and boot seeing as the softmod is on there just not picking up but again no love.

It is softmodded yes but not by me it was done by a friend. since then this prob has occured. he's tried somestuff none of it works and he wasnt to clear on what he tried but at the moment he had put a clean MS dash on it and it also has the softmodded dash (EvoX) but its not being picked up and it boots straight to the attempt to update via live screen no matter what ive tried

ok if it is still sofmoded then do u have the game u softmoded it with? if so try sicking it in and running the installation again

OK i'll try it, have to rent it or something, but no other games seem to even boot up only the update screen ever comes up.
Dont think the sofmod is even being detected before this update thing so i dunno what happen but i'll give it a burl tomoz prob

Another note, my mate used the "Syphon Filter save game exploit" apparently. what game exactly does that use/intail. ive searched and found that its a game but nothing to do with Xbox

He said splinter cell was the game but then this Syphon Filter, is that just the type of exploit or what cause im confussed and very new at this.
Have a fairly good understanding of PC's etc tho.

u cant even softmod with syphon filter it a game but u need the first splinter cell game ok try turning on xbox with eject button then turn off then turn on with no game though it will probably give some kind of dashboard

There is no dashboard what soever come up.
The Screen has a green MS backround and the litle window that winges about the update and everything else looks like the MS dash. Otherwise nothing of valu comes up. Its without a game or with, however i havnt tried putting splinter cell in yet but im predictiong same result.
The dash for EvoX is on there via hooking it up to a computer as far as i know as that was before my mate gave it back sayin he didnt know what else to try.

I wanna avoid hotswap if i can cause i dont wanna damage the drive. i have the eeprom and stuff somewhere if i wanna hook it up to PC with out hotswap but im not sure if that'll fix it

Ok! Your exact problem is that your friend has installed the softmod and then when he was trying to repair the mod your bios and dashboard has been damaged. Your DASHBOARD IS CORRUPT! Your never getting it back and your (hacked) bios is pretty much gone! Your TSOP is OK though!
From the research i ded into this problem when I had it it can happen in two a few ways. The amin cause is, fter an uninstall / repair if you click the xbox live option in a game. The game tries to patch the dash fails and causes this loop.
YOU CANNOT LOAD A GAME WHEN THIS ERROR OCCORS! So you cannot try to reload the softmod and to be honest its not the best soloution. A hotswop could (maby not) fix your problem but thats not how i did it! I looked into hotswops and they are not the best idea!
Bad News! Get a modchip! Its necessary for the safest soloution and it will allow you to turn back any problem in the future. Here is the safest step by step soloution!

- HOW TO FIX YOUR XBOX -
1. Buy Modchip. One with an OS like the Xenium Gold would be perfect. (You really need the OS for this prob)
2. Install and use the OS to put a bios on it. Since you cant boot the xbox properly you need the OS for this step.
3. Get Slayers or AID and perform a full rebuild.
4. Now your xbox will function properly!
5. Then reinstall any apps you had before.
PLEASE POST HERE IS YOU HAVE ANY QUERIES. This is what i did and now my xbox works perfectly!

oh ok, that sounds sweet.
One question though. I know i can get access to my hardrive through my PC with my eeprom. Do you think i could sufficiently rebuild my hardrive that way? I would just put a MS dash on and let the drive be stock until i'd updated it. Using halo 2 or something. Then use the most up to date softmod.
Just that a decend chip, solderless cause my solderin skills are poo, will cost me round $130 i think and i can get a new Xbox for $99 or even just by a 360 rather than by a norm.
I will def think about just getting a chiip tho

I would definetly try to acess the HD from your PC and rebuild it that way if you can! That would be a nice soloution.
I actually did buy another xbox on ebay cus i couldnt find anyone else with my problem (and assumed it was bricked).
It seemed a shame to see my bricked xbox in the corner of my room. A few months later I decided to save up and then have a crack at solving the problem and chipping the xbox.
Worked first time and wasnt hard. I now have the two chiped xboxes and use them for sys link. Also I use one for tinkering and one for playing.
No pressure thats just what i did. Course xboxes were more expensive than and i went without one for months. Do which ever you want. Just be careful if you softmod the new one.
