Hi all
Sorry for being a silly newbie, but i'm having real troubles an can't seem to find a solution in any of the troubleshooting faqs.
I've tried burning an image using DVD Decrypter using Verbatim DVD-R. Unfortunately the result is stuttering.
- i have defragged my hard drive
- i have upgraded the firmware for my Liteon LDW 811-s
- i have tried using Verbatim DVD+R
- i have tried using Verbatim DVD+R and booktyping it to DVD-ROM
- i have tried using Nero (instead of DVD Decrypter) to backup with a DVD+R (but couldn't set the booktype for some reason - the option didn't appear), creating a non-multisession disk and finalizing it at burning
- I have checked two of my attempts with Nero quality checking apps, the DVD-ROM booktyped copy made with DVD Decrypter got a 70, and the DVD+R made with Nero got 93. But the 93 stuttered more than the 70 :(
I'm quite positive that my PS2 (as old as it is - got it at release back when you had to pre-order here in the UK) is working fine, as it plays the original. But being one of the older PS2s it has that fault where it scratches my beautiful disks when placed on its side, and i'm anally retentive about scratched disks ;)
Does anybody have any suggestions that might help?
Thanks in advance,
Wombat

I would clean your ps2 laser. You didn't mention what mod you have, what game your trying, if all burnt games act like this, etc. Also, I would stick to -r discs since your ps2 is old.
V9 PS2, flip top, SMD, DVDLoader
Pioneer 107, ritek g05
DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, Nero

sorry. I'm using swap magic 3.6 and the game i'm trying to burn at the moment is Dragon Quest: Journey of the Cursed King. i'll try cleaning my laser, and i'll try a DVD-R on Nero. Thanks!

Ok, i've cleaned my laser using a new DVD lens cleaner disk i just bought. Unfortunately there's no improvement. The PS2 is quite happily loading all three backups - DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+R booktyped to DVD-ROM. With all three though, the games stutter quite badly in places.
Could anything else be the problem? Up until now my housemate has made backups for me, and these have been fine. Now that he's moved out and i'm having to figure out how to make it myself, i'm wondering if its my LDW 811s that isn't up to the task of making a 100% good copy - are older burners not so good with the writing strategies?
Thanks in advance for an assistance

In my personal experiance, bad stuttering comes from burning at to high a rate. What speed are you burning at?

Well here's the thing - i couldn't select 1x in DVD Decrypter, so the minimum i could select was 2.4x. in Nero i selected 1x, but the status window showed that it burnt at 2.4x too.
I looked in my manual but couldn't find out what speed the LDW 811s burns at, but i'm pretty sure its only a 4x burner, so 2.4 might be pretty fast to burn at.
What do you make of this?
Cheers!

aha. so a 4x certified DVD+R is never going to make a good burn due to the fact posted above?
any ideas why a 16x certified DVD-R, burnt at 1x, would be skipping too though?

sorry to hammer at this guys, just updating in case this sheds a new light on the subject:
this is a Nero CD/DVD Speed quality scan of another stutteriffic DVD-R, made with DVD Decryter at 2x (seeing as it wouldn't write it at 1x)
[EDIT] Bah, image isn't working...

So my burns look fine?
Hmm, the stuttering is getting worse as well. Is it possible that the backups are putting too much strain on the ol' laser and its finally giving up?

Doubt it. People say burned games are hard on the laser, but I have had my ps2 for over 5 years, playing backups for over 4 and it still works perfectly.
Do you do anything while burning (sorry but some people do)? I have a opty 165 which is dual core and even if I browse websites it makes the buffer go down which can cause stutters in the part of the burn.

I would suggest letting go the 16x and go for verbatim -r 8x and burn at 4x in Nero burn as image.
