Hi all
I was wondering whether there are any of you out there that have the knowledge, experience and time to kindly able to help a relative newbie with setting up a wireless network system. I recently got married and the introduction of Irina into my home now requires that I network my system so that Irina doesn't have to climb past me every 5 minutes when I'm working from home and she wants to change cables around from my Desktop so she can plug in her laptop to use the printer/scanner or fax machine, which can be a pain when I'm in the middle of something important.
Here is what I have and what I need assistance with in achieving, if it is possible.
My main PC is an HP Media Centre and the Opertaing system is Windows XP Media Centre with SP2 service pack installed.
I then bought Irina a laptop pc that operates on Windows XP Home edition.
My HP Desktop acts as the main PC.
Broadband connection is wireless using the following.
1. A Linksys WGKPC354G-UK Wireless-G ADSL Gateway Kit for Notebooks this comprises of a WAG354G Gateway connected to my home telephone line and it has one phone line jack plus four ethernet ports.
2. A WUSB54G Wireless-G Network Adapter that is connected to my HP Desktop PC, this has one USB Port and wirelessly communicates with the Gateway.
3. A WPC54G Wireless-G Notebook adapter card that slots into Irina's laptop to connecte her wirelessly to the Gateway to access broadband.
The above wireless system works fine we can both simultaneously access the internet but currently nothing is set up to allow communication between my HP Desktop PC and Irina's Laptop.
It may also help to know that I have two separate telephone lines supplied to our home,
The home telephone line is also the broadband carrying line and this is connected to the Linksys Gateway plus to all home telephones all are fitted with line filters.
The second telephone line is solely a business line it does not support broadband and is connected to my home office telephone, to my HP Desktop telephone jack as I access my companies Head Office server by Dial Up to access works e-mail. It is also connected to my HP 7130 Fax machine
Here is what I am aiming to acheieve.
I have an HP Office Jet 7130 all in one Printer/Scanner/Copier/Fax machine which is currently connected to my HP Desktop PC by USB Cable and is also connected to my business telephone line only.
I want to set this up so that Irina can wirelessly access and use the HP 7130 from her laptop. On the back and In use It has one USB cable connected to a USB Port on my Desktop PC, one phone line port connected directly to the telephone line socket jack. Not in use it also has one spare telephone line port for connecting to a telephone and one further telephone line port with a symbol showing a PC Monitor and Keyboard. Finally removing a plastic cover reveales what appears to be some kind of bi directional parallel plug in port, my manual however gives no information on this port
I then have an Epson Stylus Photo 1290 printer which is capable of 6 colour printing in upto A3 Size, it has one USB Port and one Parallel port and is currently connected to Irina's laptop but clutters up the kitchen. I want to put this in the spare room out of the way and I would like to be able to set this printer up so that both Irina and myself can access this printer wirelessly from her laptop and my HP Desktop.
If anyone iws able to help and guide me through the process we would be extremely grateful.
Glenn
