I would check my firmware on the burner, see if there is an updated firmware for your model here:

http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

Search by your model number. Not all burners will have updates available. Don't sweat it if yours does not. But I would update to most current if available.

The MOST probable cause for the pixelation is BAD media. What brand of disk are you burning on. I would bet it is a Memorex disk. Get some good blank media. Such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. Burn at no more than half the rated speed of the disk. ie., if the disk is rated as an 8X, burn at no more than 4X.

You said you selected 4X, but that it burned at 2X. This is not really the problem in itself. I more suspect bad media.

I am slightly puzzled by your reply. BenQ and Sony make or sell DVD burners. Many burners sold by Sony are actually made by BenQ. Was not aware that BenQ made blank disk media. I have heard of Smartbuy but do not know for sure who makes the actual disk. Probably a cheapo mfgr.

You should get some GOOD blank media made by Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim as mentioned previously.

Firmware is the programming inside the disk burner that telles it how to operate. On some burners you can update this programming when the mfgr publishes new firmware for your specific model number. Search on the site that I listed before for this software to install on your disk burner. Search for the SPECIFIC model number. Install the latest update for your burner. Be sure of what you are doing before you do it. You can ruin a burner by using the wrong firmware.

Firmware enables your burner to recognize new media and burn speeds. Yours is original and old so you will have trouble burning. Yes flashing a drive is always a risk, however it will not be able to recognize new media and you can only burn lower rated speed media. You can continue on as you are and hopefully find media that agrees with the burner, or take the chance and flash with the updated firmware it is up to you.

If you are using firmware issued by the mfgr specifically for your burner and follow the install instructions precisely, you should be ok. But the instructions will say do so at your own risk.

Worked fine for me. The choice remains up to you.
