vtech phone problem

I know this forum is for mobile phones but I thought somebody would know something about my problem and could help me. My vtech 2625 phone got struck by lightening and my base is dead. When I bought it it came with 2 handsets a base and a charger. Now I bought 2 bases and 2 handsets on e-bay thinking I could still use my old charger and have 2 bases, 1 charger and 1 handset left over. Now I can't get my 2 old handsets to accept the new bases, they will charge for awhile and then say "searching.....". I tryed by unpluging the base and taking the batteries out of handset to see if I could get the handsets to marry up with the bases but no luck. I called vtech but didn't get much help, they said it wasn't an expandable phone but I know that I just want the charger to work with my old handset off the new base. Does anyone have any ideas????
