I own a HP and it came with a DVD player. (hl-dt-st dvd-rom gdr8162b). Whenever I put a DVD inside, it does not read that there is a disc in the drive. If I put a Game CD or a music CD in the drive it will work fine. But a DVD? Even one I have viewed before, its as if there is no disc in the drive. Even if I open MY Computer it doesnt read it.
Could this be a codec problem? I do not know anything about Codecs and dont want to dig too deep into it if its not the case.
My computer has the option of System Restore but I have too many applications I would hate to lose.
I would appreciate any help anyone can give me. I hope I came to the right place. lol

This has worked for a couple other folks. See if it helps you.

In your device manager, right click on your burner, and click "Uninstall". After it uninstalls, reboot, and let Windows detect new hardware, and install a new driver for you.
Good luck! Let us know how it goes...............

Well I tried uninstalling it then restarted the computer. It found new hardware but I still have the same problem. I also notice that when I put a DVD in the drive, I can hear it turn a little at a time and once in a while I will see a tiny picture of a disc appear next to my cursor, but I never hear the drive truly ingage and really spin. I will hear the drive spin hard for other disc types just not a DVD.
My friend thinks the hardware side of it is going bad and I need a new DVD player. Could this be the problem?
Also, I have tried putting the model number in the internet and cannot find out who makes it. Is this an Hewlet Packard DVD player? Because I cannot even find anything in the HP sight for this model.

It may be going bad, but it seems like if other discs work, dvds should too. Oh well..........burners are real cheap now. Check out these sites for good deals on LiteOn, BenQ, and others, for around $35-$55.
