whenever i log in to wifi on mario kart ds, i am able to find other people, but when i start the race, the game will just pause and after a period of time it says that you were disconnected by the opponent or "the opponent has disconnected" does anyone have info about this problem? thanks!

How strong is your wifi signal? check the bars to see if it aint YOU thats disconnecting.

nintendo recommends you set your router to 1-2mbps TX rate.. so try that out
