I need to buy some DVD-RW discs. I have read one thread on another afterdawn forum which said TDK is the best however in this forum it says they are crap. What are the best DVD-RW's that I should buy please?
Thanks

here's a link re TDK (write once media not rewritable) - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/380993/2287107
i believe rewritable DVD media is more forgiving when it comes to disc manufacturers but i have no technical facts on that, it's just what i read here and there. Anyone is welcome to backup or shootdown what i think about rewritable media

hi :)
my personal choice on rewriteable's is Verbatim then Ritek. Verbatim has the edge on speed by being 4x. where as Ritek are 2.4x. as for quality and amount of rewrites goes, they are much of a muchness

Thanks for that. I read in various places on this forum that Verbatim were good for DVD-R so I assumed that they would be good for DVD-RW as well so yesterday I bought:
DVW1032-5 5 Discs Verbatim 4x DVD-RW 4.7GB Jewel Case (43285) @ £3.90 = £3.90
Very good price as well. There were cheaper options but what is the point of buying cheap crap if they don't work properly?

Right you are creaky...instead of just one coaster per disc, you can make multiple ones with the RW's.
I agree with gurnard and creaky on the Verbs, they are the all around kings of media.

Two questions. My Verbatim VD-RW's have been delivered and I am a little concerned that:
1) They are ordinary Verbatim and not Verbatim Datalifeplus what is the difference, if any, please?
2) The DVD identifier program says that they are Mitsubishi Chemical Corp MCC01RW4X - are they genuine Verbatim?
Thanks aw56001

hi :)
Quote: Mitsubishi Chemical Corp MCC01RW4X
yes this is the 4-rw
they also do MKM-012W6X01 6x-rw (although i would stick to the 4x)
their 4x +rw is MKM-A02 which i use because they have the ability to be booktyped
as to why
Quote: They are ordinary Verbatim and not Verbatim Datalifeplus what is the difference
i've no idea i'm afraid (creaky is the man to ask this)
@ LOCO :)
just for the record RITEK now make 2.4....4....6 and 8x RW's

I misread and didn't see the RW in the post, sorry. As for the difference, there is none...Verbatim has only three manufacturers that I know of for their DVD's...MKM, MCC and TY. All of which are top notch, the only difference is the TY may be slightly higher quality but the differences are negligable and it depends on who you are talking to...we all have our favorites.

I was going to send them back as the goods weren't as advertised. The shops .jpeg clearly shows Datalifeplus marked on the right hand side of the box. What I got were ordinary Verbatim discs i.e NOT Datalifeplus. If the difference between them is none or negligable I will keep them.
Thanks

If you've already ran them through DVD Identifier and they've produced the MID code you posted earlier you've got the real deal...you should be happy with them.

Mitsubishi Chemical (MMC or MKM, depending on whether the name is the English- or Japanese-based version) owns Verbatim. DataLife Plus for CD-R means an additional hard coating on the upper surface of the disc to protect the lacquer/dye/alloy layers below. DVDs do not need that protection because the recording layer is in the middle of the disc. I could only find DataLife Plus for DVD+R in the Verbatim website, and it is distinguished by a metal azo-cyanine dye rather than the advanced azo-cyanine dye used in the other Verbatim discs.
Rewritable discs suffer from the same drive incompatibility problems as dye-based discs, but there are fewer manufacturers of rewritable discs so the problem is not as wide-spread. RW discs need 5 to 9 vacuum chambers for the deposit of sputtered metal layers on these discs, and that equipment is much more expensive that that used for dye-based media. The other problem is that although a 16X DVD disc can be recorded at 1X to 16X speeds, the range for rewritable discs is only about two multiples: 1X-2X-4X or 4X-6X-8X, and so forth because of the physics of phase change materials.

Joe
Thanks for the explanation. That's most helpful. I've had no problems with them they are fine. I sent an email to the shop where I bought the DVD-RW's complaining that their advert showed Verbatim 'Datalifeplus' on the box but I got ordinary Verbatim, I thought I had received some inferior goods.
They must have thought 'what an ignorant, dim tosser' and still haven't replied!!
Thanks
