Problems with my Sony DRX-82OU drive

I purchased a Sony DRX-820U 16x External USB 2.0 Double-Layer DVD RW/CD-RW Drive a few weeks ago and I am having a problem playing DVD's (Original) on the drive. I put the DVD into the drive and get the infamous Microsoft blue screen (my computer just shuts down). I am connected via USB 2.0. FYI - the drive will read DVD backups just not the originals. Any help on solving this problem would be helpful.
