I've made a backup of Xenosaga (its about 8GB) and i'm getting frustrated that it won't burn to a dual layer disc (and im not sure what the problem is).
If i try to burn in Alcohol 120%, it just says i need to put an empty DVD into the drive (even though my dual layer disc is empty). If i try it Nero, it also says i need to insert an empty disc (yes, these discs are empty). I finally got it to at least start burning in ImgBurn (i patched it with the toxic patcher and i changed the booktype to DVD-ROM, like the tutorial said), but i kept getting errors (something about program memory failure) and it eventually just cancelled at about 20%.
I also can't find the ripkit for xenosaga, and this would rip the cutscenes, i assume and the main reason i want to play this game is because of the cutscenes. And i can't use my original because it won't read in my drive anymore (a scratch, i presume).
So do you think my disc media is the problem? (its TDK and here is the box it comes in, if that helps: http://www.tdk.com.au/products/images/hero_2XDVD+R_DL.jpg )Or is there another way i can backup my game while keeping the cutscenes (if i cant burn to dual layer, ill be willing to play it with massively downgraded cutscene quality).

The Xenosaga rip kit actually keeps everything intact, it just rips it to 2 DVD5 discs.
I'd suggest using the newest Nero 7 to burn to dual-layer as I know this has dual-layer support. Also might be a good idea to update your burner's firmware at the same time, just in case.

Ohh, i like the idea of the ripkit then. It should solve all my problems (i have tried various ways to burn it to dual layer and ive even tried ripping the movies to just watch).
Im going to keep trying to look for the ripkit (even though everywhere i have tried so far doesnt have it as available), but if anybody has it, could they send a link to it? I'm so desperate here and anyone can help me will be very helpful.

have you tried doing it with dvdecrypter? If I'm not mistaken there's a sticky in one of the forums about ripping this game down to DVD5 (if it's not a sticky there'll at least be a thread)

I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!! I posted a question on the ps2ownz site about this too. And after looking at a description of the file in a thread, it made me think "hey, why does it say it can be downloaded". So i thought that it might be available elsewhere on the site to download.
So i clicked "download" on the menu and i found it and now its downloaded. So umm, people can laugh at me now if they want, lol.
If anyone else wants ripkits, just go to ps2ownz (or alucard.cc) and then click downloads and then the rest is obvious. Hah, i couldnt believe i didnt see this before.

Okay, im having new problems now and im completely unsure on how to fix them. The ripkit didn't work for me, yet using the ripkit mixed with manual rebuilding sort of helped me. Here's my current problem:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/286290
I used the tutorial there on how to fix the first DVD if there were problems. His tutorial did help me load the game (and everything had loaded fine), but the game freezes at a point that is about half way through the first dvd (i've just beaten three robot bosses after rescuing a character from a prison cell. i saved in a control room after it and i walked out of that room and to the left and when i walked into the next room, it froze. Im 99.99% sure its because it triggered a cutscene that i didnt have on my dvd that i rebuilt).
The extracted XENO Folder seems to be in order (XENOSAGA.10 and XENOSAGA.20 are both under 10kb, im not sure if this could be the problem. but they were extracted from the original DVD, so i believe they are meant to be small), but there is one key difference from the first disc backup that i made and his instructions.
His instructions say "make sure that files XENOSAGA.22, XENOSAGA.23, and XENOSAGA.24 are all dummy files meaning they are no more than 1kb in size." and this is true with those three files on my backup. BUT, XENOSAGA.21 is 212,600kb while the original file in the XENO Folder is 1,048,576kb (which is the same size as the XENOSAGA.22 and XENOSAGA.23, which may mean something important).
So hopefully i havent confused anyone, but would including the full XENOSAGA.21 file (that is 1,048,576kb instead of 212,600kb) in the disc 1 backup instructions fix my problem?
To Clarify, i know full well that disc 2 doesnt need to be inserted at this point as its much much earlier than what the guides specify (i think im like 4 or 5 "missions" away from that part).

just a suggestion but why don't you see if you can download the DVD5 rip of it (fits on 1 dvd disc but has video downsampled). Since you own the original I think it's legal to download it for backup purposes.
