How do I rip my DVD's to my hard drive with a great picture?

Hi all, just built a media centre PC & would like to rip some DVD's to hard drive. Would mpeg2 be the best way? if so whas the best program to convert DVD's to mpeg2?

I use dvdshrink and dvddecrypter to rip movies to my hard drive. Both have been very efficient for me when backing up my movies. I dont know if that helps you at all or not but is so cool. I dont know if you can rip them any other was without having something to remove the protections on the disc.
