dual layer burning: nothing but trouble?

I've burned plenty of single layer disks, but so far, I've only been able to successfully burn 2 (two) DVD+R DL (verbatim) disks. Here's the scenario:
desktop, 700MHz CPU, 768 RAM, XP PRO SP2, all background services turned off, defragged hard drive, TSSTCorp dual layer 16X burner with latest firmware. Ripped two disks with DVDFabDecrypter to hdd, burned each, fine to dual layer verbatim media. Using Nero Express, which came with the burner. Tried a third, failed with bad sectors on the burned disc. Tried a few more (getting expensive now!) bad sectors again.
Tried on my brand new Dell notebook, dual core, 1GB RAM, SATA, 8x dual layer TSSTcorp burner, dual layer. Tried to copy an unprotected DVD to dual layer, Roxio pre-loaded software simply said 'failed'. Loaded Nero 6, ran all updates, able to burn single layer fine, so far, all other disks have failed when they're dual layer.
So.... luckily staples will take bad discs back.. But, with two computers, and two different burners, and (I am told) top quality media, why the heck is burning dual layer so flaky, and so challenging? I understand it's supposed to be a bit more 'delicate' but the rate of failure I'm seeing seems ridiculous.

Forget Nero!
Use ImgBurn for all your dual layer burning.
99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

Bad sectors is part of the copy protection, isn't it?. What are you using to get by the copy protections?
You'll probably need DVD43, or AnyDVD running in the background.

Give it a try. Good chance it will solve your problem.

I only use DVD Decrypter to burn DL discs. IMGBurn is by same person, and should work fine. Everyone swears by it........

correct, samsung burners in both cases.
as I said in my first post, I'm using dvdfabdecrypter to rip to my hard drive.
anyway, thx for the links to the guides, I will try those. I had not heard of imgburn.

hey
tried imgburn, same result, bad sectors or unreadable sections during verification.
re: copy protection, I checked the size of the protected disc before running it through dvdfabdecrypter, and after it was 512bytes smaller, so I assume that the protection is 512, as this process has worked on 100+ other discs I've ripped this way. So, I don't think it's the ripping, it must be something else.
Faulty media? only 3 of 8 tries have worked so far. They are verbatim, supposed to be in the top quality media according to:

Faulty burner? I've had 2 dual layer burns work on my desktop, and 1 work so far on my laptop.
Fauly burning software? Nero 6 worked fine for 2 burns on my desktop, and Sonic worked for 1 on my laptop.
I'd really appreciate anyone with dual layer experience and knowledge to give me some advice.
So, my single layer burning is all good, maybe one or two failures per 100 burns, but good. Dual layer has so far been a disaster.

somebody suggested setting Nero to burn at the slowest possible speed when burning dual layer. do any of you find that actually helps? I had read a while back that burning slow was not actually of any use, so now I'm confused.

I wouldn't use Nero at all for DL burning at any speed...Imgburn should handle the layer break much better.

If you are using the right media (verbatim DL's) and a quality burner with current firmware you should be able to burn at the rated speed of the blank.

I don't burn ANY double-layer above 2.4x.
Looking through Videohelp's DVD Writer database on Samsungs, what little info I could find suggests mixed results with Samsung drives and Verbatim (MKM) DL media.
Your software (Imgburn) is good, assuming you've also removed Roxio. Even Nero 7 does an acceptable (not great) job of burning DL.
Your media is good, unless maybe you got a lemon batch.
If you burned at 2.4x, your speed is good.
Process of elimination would then suggest the burner.
Hope this helps a little.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Do as JVC and LOCOENG have suggested. Download the trial of AnyDVD for 21days for free. Use it to strip the DRMs out in background. Use ImgBurn to build the ISO and Burn the ISO also. The combo has worked for me 100% so far. Verbatim 2.4X DLs and Benq 1650.

Hello,
I'm having a similar problem.
I do all my DVD authoring using DVD LAB Pro and it always works, I burn them to Single Layer DVDs and never a single fault.
But recently, I've bought a 5-pack of Dual-Layer Discs (TDK DVD+R DL) but I haven't managed to burn them properly.
I use Nero to burn them, It burns "successfully" BUT when I play it on ANY DVD Player I have at home, the Menus don't appear, just the audio. On some DVD players I press skip to next chapter and it starts playing the first Video on the DVD...
But how do I get for the whole DVD to work properly with menus and all?
I have already spent 3 of the 5 DL DVDs I bought but none of them works properly. As previously said by gollumm "it's getting expensive now".

Just use the last 2 TDK DLs as coasters because that's what you'll get when you burn them. Buy yourself some Verbatim DLs , nothing but.
Then do what I and LOCO and JVC have suggested in THIS thread. Are you reading the thread? It's all there for you to get it right. The guides' links LOCO gives are excellent.

I have a lot of successful DVD+R DL Verbatim Back Up Burns using AnyDVD + CloneDVD 2 . Burned at 4x using LG GSA-4167B with latest firmware. Playback equal to original.
As noted by Bilbo65, CloneCD works well with Dual Layer too.
I think the key is: Good Burner that supports Dual Layer, Latest Firmware, Latest Verbatim DVD+R DL Media, and AnyDVD + CloneDVD 2 or CloneCD.
Noteworthy: I tried 2.4x and the playback was not as good.
The latest Verbs support up to 6x burning. Of course, this depends on the Burner & Firmware. Got Best Results at 4x burn speed.
Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

hmm.. still scratching my head here. read the advice, just not sure about it. I mean, two *separate* computers, DL burning problems with Imgburn on both. So, imgburn doesn't cure everything. In fact, the 4 DL burns that HAVE works, have all been by Nero 6.6.

You must have conflicts somewhere on your pc with ImgBurn. You're first I've heard with ImgBurn problems. Seems to be working for everyone else. Did you try AnyDVD free trial. With ImgBurn I've had 100% success.

no failures no hassle
if it doesn't auto select once ripped to HDD
 gif by ireland

I've had problems burning DL's with ImgBurn, as well. Get a error message that burn failed. I use ImgBurn to burn all of my single layer discs without any problems. For those it works great. (Rip with DVD Decryptor, DVD43 or AnyDVD, and then process with DVD Rebuilder).
The only thing I use DL's for is episodic TV discs. I just rip them and then burn them without running them through DVD-RB -- no need since they aren't being compressed.
I'm using Verbatim DL's and rip with DVD Decryter. I've used both DVD43 and AnyDVD. Same results with ImgBurn for both.
Nero, however, burns the DL's just fine.
