I hope I'm in the right thread here. I am wanting to burn a video file (.mpeg, AVI, wmv, whatever) onto two separate discs, such that you would have part 1 and part 2. It is a movie/video file. Using Nero, I found where you can edit the file and split it. However, this gets really complicated. There is also a cut tool, which I can't make out what the difference is between splitting it and cutting it. After I successfully created two distinct parts of this movie, they are only in what Nero calls the story board. I don't see any option to burn one particular part. The only thing I see is exporting that part, which I attempted to do, but it was still exporting the whole entire movie. I hope I'm not too confusing here and that someone will be able to help me with this. Again, I am wanting to burn a video file onto two separate discs, very much like what hollywood does with some of their films. You buy a DVD and you have two discs, part 1 and part 2, because the whole thing is too big to fit onto one disc, or all of the extra stuff does not permit one disc. Doesn't have to be Nero. Anything can be recommended. Nero is just the only software I have tried. Thanks.

You *should* be able to cut. Let's be sure you are doing this right. Start Nero Vision and select CD or DVD, depending on which one you want to make. Click Add a file to add your stuff, when click Edit Movie (or right-click to select Edit). On the viewscreen on the left, there should be a scissors icon. Click that and move the beginning and/or end markers below the viewscreen as necessary to make your edits (make sure to note the end time so you can start the next cut where you left off.) Don't click Export. Click the Next button as necessary to get to the burning screen. You can now burn this to VCD, SVCD or DVD as you see fit, and just do the same with the other half of the movie.

BTW, you can adjust the quality settings if necessary - that might be enough to get everything onto one disc. Using non-LPCM for audio really helps free up some space if you're doing DVD work. Use the More button in Nero.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

nope. This is going to be really hard to explain. I followed the cutting procedure you stated and I am able to cut say the first half of it out, which it lands on the story board, but how do I get the remaining amount out? When I go to do a cut again and do the other part, it just replaces the other cut in the story board. I should also note that splitting seems to work perfectly except for the last part. If I move the slider to the middle of the movie and click split, it slits it and what I end up with on the storyboard is the whole movie, the first half of the movie or that part of the split. I do not get the second half of it and don't know how. If you feel this can be done by cutting though, then lets' stick to cutting. It seems that I have at least one peice of the movie or part. But when I click next, the whole entire thing is there for burning. When I go back, it doesn't go back to what I was working on, but goes to Nero's main menu making me have to do all that all over again.

You can also do this with CloneDVD which is simple to use and to split a file. You can dl a 21 day free trial of the program, however you will need to convert your file to Video Compliant first with Nero Vision Express. Convert it to your HDD and the open the file with Clone.

Clone can be gotten here

You realize of course you can just compress this file to fit on one disk you do not need to split it to two disks.

You just have to work a bit with NeroVision Express' cut/export function . It does work properly, it's just damn confusing. After you do your cut make sure to hit the stop (square button), it should clear the hatch marks and now just show the cut section, under configure you can then change the video bitrate if you want to fill the blank, you can then export to a new file name. Always remember to have 'enable smart encoding' ticked so it doesn't re-encode DVD ready files.
