Are you using NeroVision Express and is it freezing during encoding or is the program locking up during burning a disk? You need quite a bit of memory available for NeroVision Express, at least 512mb, and even more is better. What version of Nero are you using? You might try an alternative AVI to DVD conversion program like one of the following:

VSO's ConvertXtoDVD: http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/
DVD Copy 5 Platinum: http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/InterVideoDVDCopy_Profile.jsp
TMPGEnc Xpress 4: http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/download/te4xp.html#trial

Don't use Nero for DL burning, convert your AVI's with Express or one of the programs listed by laddyboy and then burn the resulting file using Imgburn...here are some guides.

Nero is a complex set of programs that has grown enormous in size, functionality, and complexity over the years. With complexity comes problems. Imgburn is a program that does one thing and does it well and that's burn disks.

Did you try using the Image Recorder as the output device in NeroVision instead of your DVD burner? NeroVision will create a Nero image file with an nrg extension. This is a digital map for the DVD to be burned. If the creation of that nrg file is successful, then use ImgBurn as LOCOENG suggested to burn the Nero nrg image file to a DVD.

Otherwise try ConvertXtoDVD. ConvertX will watermark the output in the trial version. I wouldn't let the program burn a DL disk though. Just create a folder of DVD files or an ISO image file as the output (whatever the program allows) and burn either the folder or ISO image file with ImgBurn.

In the very last NeroVision window/screen called the Burn Options window, the one with the Burn button at the lower right, in the upper right hand corner, select Burn To... and select the Image Recorder.
