How do you softmod a PS1?! What do you need?!

I want to do this as inexpensively as possible.

Boot disc & lid sensor spring. Or you could use the inside of a bic biro & do a lot of swapping between original disc & backup (approx 4 swaps are required, and timing is essential though)
Use Google to look for more info on a playstation boot disc, or playstation swap method.

Is there any way I can softmod it using things I can buy at my local retail outlet such as Future Shop or Best Buy?!
