I just hooked up my new HP printer today and it works great but the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon appeared in the taskbar and it will not go away. I thought this only shows up for "hot swap" devices like cameras. My old printer never made this icon appear - why is it showing up now? It's not a big deal but I like to keep my desktop clean and since I'm not intending to unplug this printer for awhile, I see no reason for that icon to be there. I know that I can hide it and I realize that if I get rid of the utility, it will affect the plugging in of real "hot swap" devices, so how do I get it to not affect this printer - do I need to change the USB port? Will it just go away eventually?

Does your new PC have a media card reader in it, if so that will cause the removal icon to appear.

I just realized that must be the problem - my new printer has a camera plug-in/reader port which is probably why Windows is reacting this way.

Thats definately it. My printer has something similar to yours and the icon is always there. If it is not used, it will eventually hide itself in the system tray.

A little off topic, but would that include a PictBridge capable printer?

Resistance is futile! You will be assimilated!
