I think you guys have sold me on getting a benq but now I am confused as to purchase an OEM or the Retail Box.
Can one of you experts help me understand the difference and guide me?

Thanks

OEM stands for "Original Equipment Manufacturer. A producer that provides a product to its customers, who proceed to modify or bundle it before distributing it to their customers."

as to the DW1650, i have it in both retail and OEM. The retail drive says Benq on the front of the drive and comes with a manual, screws etc in a proper Benq box. The OEM drive doesn't say Benq on the front and comes with pretty much just the drive itself. It can sometimes be a great way to buy things cheaper.

Creaky,
Thanks for the info just a couple more questions if you don't mind.
1. If the OEM is just the drive I guess I have to go to a web site to download the drivers?

2. Who would warrenty the drive the manf or seller?

May have more depending on answers.

Thx

no problem; as to the warranty not sure exactly; i've always sent things back to the supplier myself. As to drivers you wouldn't need any, certainly not for XP anyway, the drive will just be recognised.

Sounds like HP drives, LOL

Some of those may be rebadged drives. The 1650p is a pioneer/rebadged benq 1650. Some of them have different firmware and to get them to perform as well as a genuine benq 1650-crossflashing may be required.

Get the genuine Benq 1650. Benq also has a dvd-rom drive called the 1650,be careful on that as well.

Newegg.com is out of them and the 1655. When newegg gets some hot drives in,they run out of them very quick. They should get some more in stock very soon.

Thanks Saugmon and Creaky
I was going to get the benq from newegg but they sold out while I was waiting for replies to my post. So I got the Lite-On SHM-165H6S retail pack for only $35.55 with free shipping. I already have a Lite-On 832S that came with my computer and am very happy with it so I can only hope the new one will be as good.

I was just going to edit my last post. I bought mine here:

http://www.us.ncix.com/products/index.ph...anufacture=BENQ

Higher than Newegg.com,but when I bought my 1650-none of them were in the USA at that time. 1 week later,newegg.com had them for $20 cheaper, UGGH!

Good luck with that litey. Should be a great booktyping burner.I haven't heard too much about that model#,but that could be a good thing, LOL

Thanks for the info.
I should be getting my drive on Friday and am sure I am sure I will have questions on Light Scripe.
Not sure how much I will use the Light Scripe but figured at that price might as well get it.
I only burn movies to share with my son and daughter who live in another part of the state.
This web site has sure helped me understand better how to do a good burn. I also learned a lot about why I was making so many coasters as I was using bad media. Before coming here I did not know the difference between the different media brands and was buying only on price. I always thought the coasters I was getting was because of something I was doing wrong.

Keep that in mind when you send backups off your new burner to them.

New burner=Different reaction on stand alone players. They may play your other burner's backups fine, but players can do some weird things when you slap in backups from different burners.Usually the dreaded no disc error. You may have to switch formats. Being a lite-on drive,it should have booktyping capability to help eliminate those stand alone player compatability issues. This is done through a utility from lite-on and using the plus format media... Very valuable if playing backups on a lot of different pc drives and stand alone players.

Hopefully all goes well for you.If not, come on back.

I believe Meritline.com and CDRDVDRmedia.com are just one company with different names. Some of the content of their websites are exactly the same. And not to mention their postal address are the same. Click 'contact us' and you will see the same address.

Why do they have to have two website and company names?

just wondering

hehe.

i don't know about online sales, i walked into a PC World today and saw them for £25 (i think they were £32ish when i last saw them in there) so just grabbed a couple, it was rude not to at that price. They're retail drives too, not OEM, may look on eBay later, might even be able to make a profit on them too!. Other than these new two, i have 2 DW1650's in constant use (one's retail, the other is OEM), a 3rd one (retail - from PC World at the £32ish price) that's still brand new as didn't have a use for it :P
