I am currently trying to get some anime that I have (.MKV) into .AVI with subtitles, that will play on my friend's PSP/DVD player/PS2 (One or the other).
I succeeded in making the .AVI, however, it had no subtitles. (I used WinAVI Video Converter. If there is a better program, preferably one that doesn't combine all the videos into one huge thing, please, feel free to give me a link to its site.)
I then used AllToAVI, this gave me working .SUB and .IDX, but no AVI. So, being logical, I combined the two working parts. I now have a good AVI file and working subtitles as long as the .AVI is played with the .SUB and .IDX in the same directory.
I am new to the subtitle realm, so I ask this question... Do I need to combine the .SUB and .IDX into the .AVI, so the subtitles will be embedded? (I ask if because I am unsure if DVD/PS2/PSPs will recognize them)
If I do need to combine them, how would I do that?
The PSP as far as I know plays mp4's not avi's. Doesn't support ttext subs nor Nero's VOBSubs though so you would need to hard encode. Not sure about the DivX player for PS2, from recollection it was pretty limited. A regular DVD player won't play avi's at all. If it it can handle MPEG-4/avi then it may be able to do VOBSub's. Otherwise if it is DivX certified you could mux as xsubs and it should work.

After you select files with winavi,if you pay attention to the box,you can find "merge into...",if you don't want to merge files, you just need not to select that.
