if u install thw two 256mb ram in dual channel and the 512mb ram in the toher slots then you should get the best results. That is assuming your mobo supports it. what mobo are u using btw?

Firstly, are the sticks of RAM your friend gave you the same specifications as what your mobo supports and are they all the same specs (timing, DDR,SDram)?

The mobo will have 2, 3 or 4 slots for the memory to be inserted (depending on the mobo), obviously if you only have 2 slots you will only be able to use 2 sticks of RAM (providing it is of a compatable type), I would start with the biggest stick and work my way down, that is 1gb, 512mb and then 256mb.

Good luck with it.
