I got my fat, V9 PS2 modded in around feb 2004 and shortly after i tried playing some psx games and [eventually] found out how to load them up (if i remember right, i had to hold down certain buttons while booting).

I rarely play psx games anymore and PS2 games load with no problems whatsoever. Recently, though, I've been in the mood to play some FFVIII XD.

I believe certain versions of dms mod chips were available at that time, but the place i took my ps2 to wasn't super high quality so there might be a Magic 3.x or maybe something crappier in there. I've tried the psx loading steps listed in guides for magic 3.1 and 3.2 but no luck so far.

It also came to my mind that I might be able to burn some sort of ps1 game loader [since my ps2 IS modded and loads burned dvd's with no problem...]. I don't have a fliptop or wtvr, though ;o

If anyone has any suggestions that would be awesome.

You can download the "breaker pro" from emule, or copy it if you have somebody who owns it, and it will work, since you have a modchip.
To force the psx games to load try to hold down the circle button of controller from when you press the reset button untill the words "sony computer entertainment" go off, and release it.
If you have a Messiah chip press quickly twice the reset button, and wait till the game loads
