Im looking for advice on a new project that I am starting.
Background: I have about 1200 Dvd's between the ones I own and my wifes Ballet performances. (Princable dancer in a large Company) The Ballet DVDs are burned recordings and are not replacable. I always keep a backup in case of scratches but this is getting to be a major hassle with over 500 performance recordings. The idea of having a HD backup is becoming more apealing everyday as I see HD's fall in price.
Plan: Rip the discs in ISO form and catagorize them on the HD's.
Hardware
CPU: Intel Core Duo 2.4GHZ
(Could I get away with a 1.8? Im tempted to wait for the Quads, or a price drop, but the heat and power usage cuts make it ideal compared to a PentD.)
RAM: 2x 1GB DDR2 800
(Dual Chan. This seems like enough, although I have 2 slots open)
MoBo: ABIT AB9 Pro
(Always been a big fan of ASUS but 9 SATAII is perfect for this op)
Sound: Creative XFI 7.1
(Should integrate nicly into my HT)
Video: Almost any HDTV/S-Vid out Compatable PCIE16.
(Ideas welcome. 52" Sony Widescreen.)
TV Tuner: Hauppauge WinTV-PVR250MCE
(I've heard good things, but have no on hands exp.)
HD: 12x 500GB SATAII3.0 7200RPM
(SATAII seems perfect for this. High transfer rats, affordable)
SATA PCI: PROMISE SATA300 TX4 [4x SATAII]
(Adds those extra 3 SATAII connections, and keeps an extra for expanding.)
Optical Drive: Almost any DVDRW with 2M+ Cache and a 21000+ Transfer Rate. IDE Due to SATA usage.
Case: Lots of Airflow/Fans
(I have a few server and ATX cases, but have seen some HTPC designed cases that look slick.)
P/S: 650W?
(I could go as high as 1000W, but only 2 drives would ever be fully powered up at a time, no SLI, and the lower power draw of the Core Duo, do I really need it?)
I understand how to do it, it really just comes down to how much power do I really need in a Tivo on crack? Anyway, any thoughts or experiences you have to share would be great.
