Does anyone have an opinion as to whether it's better to burn as .avi files for direct play off of CD in a DVD player or is it better to convert to MPEG2 and burn to a DVD (with an app like ConvertXtoDVD).

I guess I'm asking will the quality be better by leaving the .avi alone or converting?

Thanks.

From everything I've read of peoples experiences, quality is better than any encoder you can buy online when you burn the AVI as data but I have no personal experience with this, so someone that has is better equipped to give advice.

Hi there,

I watched 1 .AVI on my LG-LRH539 DVD Recorder.

It played the .AVI but I could not Fast Forward or go Backwards.

So if I stopped it, I guess I would have to watch the whole think until that moment I was at :)

So all movies I convert, you can jump chapters (by 5 minutes is the default), just move around like any movie.

So I convert everything, and if I was a quality freak, I would go by the original at the store and keep it in a safe place :)

i use TMPGEnc xpress 3 (and 4, wish there was an cracked ENGLISH version!) and it is awsome, AC3 support, tons of good resize fetures and tons of converting options. if you like tweaking to get the very best quality TMPGEnc 2.5 or xpress 3 or 4 is the best.

Yes, you can tweak TMPGEnc 2.5 for great results but they all add to the encoding time and it is rediculously slow already (and I have a fast computer). An average video takes 9 1/2 - 10 hours to encode at 2 pass VBR and then you still need an authoring and burning program. I don't know how Express 3 or 4 are for speed but I have read that 4 is slower thhan 3. I still would recommend ConvertXtoDVD for it's excellent quality, ease of use and speed.
