I've got where I trust you guys so send me in the right direction.
My son has a laptop with no dvd burner and I am thinking about getting him a Lite-on SHM-1656S and putting it into an external box. Will this work ok or am I better off just paying more and get him an external drive?

You can do it that way, but you have to make sure you get an enclosure that will work correctly with your drive. I don't know a whole lot about external enclosures or drives, but my money would be on an internal drive in an external enclosure vs. external drive.

The drive is $35.55 at newegg and I found an external encloser for $20.00 so about $55.00 and I have not found an external drive that low.
