I bought this movie from a video store, got it cheap because it was an ex-rental, unfortunately its also a rental version which means it makes me watch about 10 mins of trailers before getting to the menu screen.

I'd like to be able to make a backup copy of the movie without the trailers.
I've found that the trailers are in the file called 'VTS_05_1.VOB' so i only need to bypass the playing of this file.

Can anyone help me with this? I've searched the forum and found a post that said it was possible with IFO Edit, however the method described there didn't work for me, i get an illegal navigation command in IFO Edit and if i burn to DVD its unplayable in a standalone.

So if anyone knows how to do this or has any suggestions, please let me know.

Hello,
If the ex-rental is single layer, just back it up using DVDXCopy, but change the "Start Normal" option to something else, such as "Start with Movie".

If it is a dual layer, well I have been experimenting successfully with combining DVDXCopy and DVD2One as follows:

1. Change the Work Space Folder setting in DVDXCopy to some place on your hard drive you can easily find with Windows Explorer. Do not put a blank disc in your burner.
2. Change the Start Normal setting to whatever you want and then reduce the Chapter Split to the minimum possible amount (this is simply to save time). Add any special features you want to keep and leave off the ones you don't want.
3. Click on Copy Now and let the program run its course until it asks for a blank disc. Do NOT click on anything at this point. Leave the dialogue box open.

4. Use explorer to find the Work Space Folder you specified before. There should now be a DXDXCOPY folder in there with an audio_ts and video_ts folder inside. Move the video_ts folder safely out of the Work Space Folder.
5. Now click on Cancel Whole Burn and close DVDXCopy. The temporary work folder gets automatically deleted, but you should still have the files you moved. This will have all your menus, whatever special features you chose to keep plus about half an hour or so of your main movie. Test it in PowerDVD at this point. This will show whether you chose the right Start with... setting and you will notice that you can still click on the special features options, but it just jumps back to the menu again.
6. Now, take note of what vts set your main movie is, e.g. vts_01_x and delete every file in this set including BUPs, IFOs and VOBs.
7. Use DVD Decrypter to rip all the vts_01 files from your original DVD into the directory you are now working in. You have just replaced the half an hour of main movie with the whole film.
8. What you are left with is a ripped version of the whole disc with only the special features you selected. The final stage is to run it through DVD2One. Your movie will then fit on one disc with all menus and maximum picture quality.

I hope this is clear for you. I've heard people say you can just pick and choose special features using DVD Decrypter, but I have never got that to work in all the times I have tried it.

Thats a good guide HeeHawBoz. However, i feel that DVD Shrink is the better option to do this. Simply download DVD Shrink by clicking on the name and visit this website:

Use this guide until afterdawn have uploaded the DVD Shrink Guide.

reddragon - if you want to play around with IFOEdit, it can be done very easily.

Each VOB will have a VOB id - the 10mins of trailers will have a different VOB id to that of the movie - with IFOEdit you can remove VOB id's as an option....

Have a look in the VIDEO_TS.ifo, you can see the VOB id's here and therefore pick the VOB id you need to remove - and then reprocess the ifo's and get vts sectors.....

However - I have had no experience with dvd xcopy - but Try Oriphus guide with dvdshrink (free) it is a nice easy uncomplicated read - and should solve your problem.....

doesn t dvd x copy EXPRESS do this perfectly ?
also look what just happened to express.

, XPRESS 3.0 is going to be released which will allow you your choice of just the movie (as is presently the case) or the ENTIRE DVD. All menus, special features and the movie on one DVD.

so now you can pick and choose , just movie and no rental promos/or the whole thing. thats what you want right?

Red Dragon, Go with Oriphus' idea. You can chop off the trailers at any point during the movie you like. You can even chop off the credits if the disc is a wee bit over the capacity of the dvd-r.

DVDcopy express? No thanks.

<heh-heh> :)

Yeah, just having a bit of fun, Chris. Actually, I was just trying to say that I think Xpress is great. It's pretty much the only video transcoding program I use. In deference to the thread here though, it (Xpress) cannot yet pick and choose title-sets like (say) DVD-Shrink. That capability will be coming in the DXDXCopy "Platinum" version. But right now, Xpress (currently version 2.5.2), makes gorgeous movie-only backups.

Promised shortly (couple of weeks?) the new Xpress ver 3.0 will be released which (get this):

PUTS THE **WHOLE** DUAL-LAYER DISC ONTO A SINGLE DVD5 BLANK!!!

Menus and *all* !!!*. Nothing is left out - trailers, commentary tracks, 'extras', bios, whatever. It's sort of like a "mini-clone" of the original. Hope the quality holds up.

In particular, I am hoping it will do Episodic Discs (TV shows, mostly) just as easily as movies. (Including multiple title sets is supposed to be what this new version is all about).

OK, end of "ad". <gg>

"Oh Yass, meester Orafuss....pleeze send moch moch monies for seek grandmawthers inna hospee Tal. Merci beaucoups mon ami, et Bonsoir! Au Revoir. Ta Ta.

lol - You have to remember that you probably get a copy of Xpress 3 for free, we dont sadly. It does sound good. Just two things though for me.
1). I would be worried about the compression rate and quality of a 7GB movie on a 4440MB Disc.
2). I really hate DVD Menus. They are the worst things waiting for them to load up each time. I always remove them, though i understand their function for extras and such things.

Oh..and i liked your Gollum impression, not bad when you read it. lol ;-) Keep up the.....um...strange....um good work lol

Hi all. :)

Monsieur A_Klingon, have you made any sort of comparison test between DVDXCopy Xpress and DVD Shrink 2.3?

DVD Shrink already contains the new DVDXCopy Xpress features you described.
Its ability to choose which title(s) you want to include on your backup, the level of compression you want to apply to each title (you can even use still images), the "Start/End" feature that enables you to "crop" a title, etc etc..
All these make DVD Shrink much more flexible than DVDXCopy Xpress, while staying very user-friendly.
The fact that it's also free is just the icing on an already yummy cake. :D

The only reason I can think of for you to use DVDXCopy Xpress over DVD Shrink must be the quality of the backups.

So are they any better?
What viewing equipment did you use to compare them on?

Merci d'avance. ;)
