I have a box thets about 6 months old. the hard drive went bad it wont boot and is making lots of noise. I want to replace the drive and soft mod it, but I was told I have to get the vital info from the old drive first. I cant due to it being bad. what can I do? is there a place that have this info I can download?

In this case, you're basically SOL in terms of salvaging that info. I suggest looking into getting a mod chip, since it'll be much easier to install a new hard drive with a mod chip than trying to manually extract the EEPROM from the motherboard.

Thanks goes out to theridges for the userbars :)

Yes, if you install a chip you don't have to worry about the old hard drive's info.

Unfortunately, this isn't going to be a cheap process, especially when we're talking about getting both a chip and a hard drive. Worthwhile mod chips run anywhere from $20 to $60 and hard drives are $40+. For a decent sized hard drive and a mod chip, we're talking about $100 in hardware.

The cheapest route would probably be to get a Duo chip and a 80GB hard drive off Newegg.

Use either AID or Slayer's and you'll be fine. Just burn to a DVD-R and run it on the Xbox once the chip is installed. They're both fairly straight forward, so you should be fine.

Both of them are capable of automatically installing dashboards and applications on fresh hard drives. They'll also format and prep the hard drive for you as well, so you don't have to worry about messing with settings too much.
