I heard playing bad DVDs is bad for the PS2 laser.
Is playing CDs bad for it too? Or just playing bad ones?

The ps2 has a hard time reading cd's period, so yeah, burnt cd's can be bad.

Playing any backups on the PS2, whether on CD or DVD is bad for the laser, but using good quality media, and regularly cleaning the lens will lessen the effects.

I see, so when the inevitable happens, should I even consider fixing the laser, or just replace my passed away PS2? I mean expenses wise.

Once a laser is done, its done, no amount of fixing will help.
And since a new laser costs about 2/3's the price of a refurbished pre-owned PS2, then you'd be best off replacing the whole PS2 when the inevitable happens.

Why is playing backups bad for laser?
I thought if you use quality CD/DVD it wouldn't harm it.
What does Sony do to their original copys that makes them not harmful to the laser?

Original discs are pressed, backups are burnt.
Its easier on the lens reading a pressed disc, than a burnt disc. Pressed discs also have a better 'reflectivity' than blank discs that you burn to, so the laser picks up the info far easier.

And what does it phisically mean that non-original discs are bad for the laser? I mean if u use burnt discs a lot if times what happens with the laser? will something get damaged?

It's just more work on the laser. I played burned DVD and CD games on the same PS2 for 3 years and it still works fine.

Best way to play backups on your PS2 is through HD (Hdloader , Hd Advanced USB Extreme etc etc) No Wear and Tear on your laser that way...

RITEK G05 8x DVD-R, Verbatim 8x DVD-R, Sony 8x DVD-R.
For CD-R it doesn't matter about quality, any CD-R will do.
