OK before i start i do appoligies to anyone i offend in this rant (because although i dont plan on i more than likely will swear and im not sure how that goes down here) so if you easily offended dont realy it.
to skip to my problems go to bottom but id advise readin my speach as you will know whats goin on.

Ok why the fuck do computer companies make stuff that doesnt work!!! and why do computers slowly kill themselves. right my main reason for this is i have a dvd burner
_NEC DVD+RW ND-2100AD 106F
(notice the firmware update)
right at first it never read or wrote DVD-R or DVD+R. so i had to spend lots of money on dvd+rw's. but my sister bought DVD+R once by accident and all of a sudden they worked. which was all well and good until it decided to stop. so i upgraded the firmware and delighted it was working again....but only for a week and im back to square one.
im hoping that some one has been having this problem and has resloved it and id appreciate any help. also if anyone knows where i can get even newer firmware or if i can crossflash it into a good burner. By the way im gettin the dreaded power callibration error.
my media (even if not well known) are good enough
Ridisc Xtreme AAA+ media.
apperently they are good!
my burning method is dvd deycyptor through and through. i love it and am not changing.

so pls help with firmware or crossflashing.
or editing the regestry to fix the power thing
or just recommend the fucking best possible DVD+- rw i can get for around ?125 or american $160. by the way im irish so pls dont recomend things you can only get in like japan.

Thanks for readin this because im sure it was quite boring

DVD+R is supposed to work in that drive, as well as +RW. DVD-R does not.

Firmware updates are available for some drives (incl. yours, I believe, from rpc1.org) that will add DVD-R and DVD-RW support. Maybe.

As far as the off-and-on thing, drives are very picky about media. Ridata has a marginal reputation, see:

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

As far as rants go, that's more for the Safety Valve forum but I'll also say that I'm tired of manufacturers producing garbage or half-assed designs, such as drives that are otherwise good all around but won't bitset (like the otherwise-wonderful NEC and Pioneer drives) or who push outdated, worthless, crippled standards on us like Blu-ray and HD-DVD.

But if you don't like it vote with your wallet and vote against any politician helping the electronics and entertainment industries.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.
