Hi all, I have a couple DVD recording devices that are best used with lower speed discs, like 1-4X, but lately I have found it hard to find DVDs at this speed. Checked a few local retailers and see all 16X on the shelf. Even on shopping sites they show pics of the media showing "up to 4X", and then the item description SAYS 16X!!!!
are these now sold at a premium in some underground market?
what gives?

hate to tell you, but technology moves on real fast these days :)
even 8x media is being quickly replaced by 16x. You need to try to future proof yourself unfortunately, i'm sure some places do 1-4x discs but surely it would make sense (and be cheaper) to buy a newer burner instead of trying to find ever-more scarce discs

i agree, its moving at an alarming pace.
The new component DVD recorders dont compare in features with the one I have. I'd love to upgrade, but seems the industry spent all their time developing media and didnt put much into features of new hardware. The hardware hasnt improved much other than burn faster. And if youre recording video with a standalone dvd recorder, you dont need high speed really...

ah, i assumed you meant dvd burners in a PC. I'd have thought it would be less of a problem than a PC burner then; there are rewritables of lower speeds fairly readily available (i'm in UK), even in PC World the other day i saw packs of rewritables going for £1 a pack, amazing price, but they were 2.4speed so old stock/speeds. I didn't buy any as i can still find higher speed rewritables at reasonable prices, plus i don't use my DVD Recorder much (it's quite new so i'm able to pick and choose media, for now anyway). But now i've written this reply i realise those 2.4speed discs would have probably been ideal for my recorder. Ah well, luckily i have a couple tubs of rewritables that should last me as i don't use the recorder very much (should really have bought a hard disc recorder instead, but it gets used when my folks want me to tape something).

If you burn a lot it's easier just to get a newer burners. I hit that crossroad myself a few months back. I replace 4x burners with 16x burners and I'm much happier for it.

@CJ420..........
If you have a Big Lots store nearby, check and see what they have. Maybe there's a different store name, in your area, that sells discontinued or clearance items.
Also places like drug stores, K mart, etc., that sells dvds, but don't sell a lot of them, may still have some in stock.
Have you tried the 8X or 16X blanks. The package usually says 1X - 16X, so they should handle slower burns, if that's all your burner is capable of.
@Memnock...........
You must post your answers, without reading all the posts in the thread.... If you had read them, you'd have seen that he's not talking about PC burners, which are easily replaced.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Your drives may or may not burn the 16x discs at all. The 8x Sony DVD drive in my dads Vaio won't record the Ritek 16x discs I tried at all but the external 16x LG unit (with original firmware) saw the discs at 4x & burned them fine at that speed. If you want to continue using your drives then try to find some 8x or 16x media that works in it. TY & Sony should do fine but others I don't know. The other idea is to try to find some newer firmware from the drive manufacturer. That should let you burn more media with the drive or drives.

I still use my LiteOn 4X burner extensively. It's like a Timex watch, takes a licking and keeps on ticking. It sees 8X Verbatim, 8X Sony (MIJ-TY) and 8X Maxell (MIJ-002) with write descripters of 2.4X and 4X. This is even with 1-8X on both the Verbatim and the Sony labels. All write just fine at 4X. My 16X LG sees the exact same media as 4X - 12x write descripters.
The 4X burner will not recognize Verbatim 16X at all.
BTW, I have still have some old TDK (RicohJpnR01) 4X media. The write descripters are 2.4X and 4X for the 4X burner, the very same as all my 8X media.
I was hesitant at first, thinking my 4X burner wouldn't be able to burn the 8X media as well as the 4X media. My fears were unfounded. Just make sure you have the last known firmware. Now, if you have a 2.4X burner, you might have a problem.

CJ420- all of the members replies to your ? / problem seem to be great ideas given your situation! I agree with Jvc - that places like drug stores, K mart, etc., that sells dvds, but don't sell a lot of them, may still have some in stock. - Like walgreens drugstores for example .Also Dunker's reply about taiyo yuden 4X
http://www.supermediastore.com/dvdr-4x.html. You maybe able to find some Taiyo Yuden, Ritek or other brand media their or possibly @ Meritline.com or One of the other retailers Like newegg.com it's worth a look! In any case though Good Luck and happy Hunting ! Ciao!
