My PC was able to play DVDs fine in Windows Media Player using Roxio's MPEG2 decoder (installed as part of Roxio DVDMAX).

Now that I have installed the trial of Nero 7 (all I installed were Nero Burning ROM and the tools), I can see interlace artifacts when playing the same DVD in Windows Media Player. Nero installed its own codec even though I told it not to install Nero's player. If I run the Microsoft Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility, it shows Nero Video Decoder as "preferred" (but not MCE-compatible but who cares).

Even if I re-set Roxio's codec as "preferred" I still get the interlace artifacts. The only way I can get around this is to uninstall Nero 7 (which therefore makes it useless to me).

Can anyone suggest a way to have Nero 7 on my PC but use the (better) MPEG2 codec from Roxio? Perhaps if I reinstall DVDMAX but I'm hoping to avoid that because in a year's time when I purge/re-install my system I will have forgotten this :-(

Alternatively, is Nero 6 any better-behaved in this regard? I don't particularly like Nero's kitchen-sink approach, but Roxio is just as guilty these days.

Thanks ... Mike

i think the issues you are having are because you have both roxio and Nero on your system at the same time.It has to be one or the other not both as these 2 programs , good by themselves like to conflict when put together.

you will need to use roxio's zapper to get rid of roxio and also use the Nero clean tools to get rid of the residue Nero files.Once you have uninstalled both, then select one or the other.

As to a personal comment. Both mpeg2 components in roxio and Nero sux.If you want a dedicated mpeg2 converter, suggest you try convert x to dvd or the old version of DivX to dvd. Then use Nero ver 6.6.0.18's recode to get your project to disc

Thanks for the response guyrus.

It would be nice to have both programs co-exist but provide non-overlapping functionality (I told Nero *not* to install the player, but I guess it knew better than me and decided I needed the codec anyway).

Is there no easy way to manage codecs so that you can delete the ones that you don't want?

Thanks ... Mike

not really.

Heres the free version of DivX to dvd before it changed its name to convery x

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_...xtodvd_free.cfm

try this , see how you go and if it says 'it cant find a suitable decoder, it means you need to get the next upgraded version. There is a trial of convert x on Afterdawns software section

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question, but I do now know the answer to my question and thought I would post it here for future reference.

To remove the Nero codecs (assuming you don't want to use them), do the follwing in a CMD window:

cd C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\DSFilter
regsvr32 /u NeVideo.ax NeVideoHD.ax
del NeVideo.ax NeVideoHD.ax

You should also be able to use the DirectShow Filter Manager to reduce the merit of the Nero codecs below that of the desired codecs (I haven't tried this, but have used it to view the merit of various codecs).
