I recently bought a phillips dvd burner for my dell and I am going to start making backups of my dvds. My girlfriend has a Hp withlightscribe on it so i am trying to decide whether i should pay $52 for 100 phillips lightscribe dvds or pay $37 for 100 verbatim dvds or $33 for 100 memorex dvds....

i hear memorex and verbatim are excellent dvds to use but i havent heard too much about the phillips...as well i could always just use a shapie to mark the verbatim and memorexs but i think it would look more professional to use the lightscribe on the phillips'....

anyone willing to give their .02 i would greatly appreciate it

thank you

Stay away from the phillips and memorex discs. Verbatims are great and should cause no problems.

You ask for recommendations and opinions. I gave you mine. I don't care what you do, it's your money. Most phillips media is made by cmc mag. I use mostly verbatim DVD+R inkjet printable media. Some verbatim DVD+R LS media and some plain silver verbatim dvd+r's.

Never use stick on labels.

Agreed with Mort81 on that,

cmc mag discs are junk discs(if we can call them like that)and should be put far from burners. But like he said,it's really all up to you about which one you're gonna use,we're just here giving you our opinions as you asked.Memorex discs can be considered as one of the most discussed media disc in forums here(Definitely NOT for top quality for sure),if you take some time to read you'll find out about it's famous reputation.

If i have to choose between philips(lighscribe),verbatim(normal) and memorex(normal),i would definitely go with the verbs, sure i'll have to use sharpie and as you said it won't look so professional as a lightscribe disc but between esthetic and quality, quality would be the most important factor concerning backups.Stick on labels can damage your backup discs over time.If you want to use good quality discs,go with TY or Verbatim, you can't go wrong with them.

Vincent.

ls1ssws6,

Caught me at a bad time I guess. Seems there are more and more here nowadays that ask for an opinion or help and then continue to argue about the replys they get. That is not the case here with you. My fault, caught me off gaurd. You did nothing wrong.

The reason phillips media is not recommended is because most of it is made by poor quality manufactures. Here's some MID codes.

Philips DVD+R 2.4x (CMC MAG.R01)
Philips DVD+R 2.4x (RICOHJPN R00)
Philips DVD+R 2.4x (RITEK R01)
Philips DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG F01)
Philips DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPN R01)
Philips DVD+R 8x (CMC MAG E01)
Philips DVD+R 8x (Philips 081)
Philips DVD+R 8x (RICOHJPN R02)
Philips DVD+RW 2.4x (CMC MAG.W01)
Philips DVD+RW 2.4x (INFODISCA01)
Philips DVD+RW 4x (PHILIPS 041)
Philips DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPNW11)
Philips DVD-R 8x (CMC MAG AE1)

Notice all the cmc mag codes. It's a craps shoot on what you're going to get and good chance it will be cmc mag. Memorex is the same way as phillips. You never know what you're going to get. Stay away from both of them.

As for which is better between verbatim and ty, I consider them equil in the +r format but would put ty's 1 spot ahead of verbatim in the -r format. Hope that helps clear things up for ya.

I would be very leary of any media being sold on ebay. There is a good chance that they are fakes. Stay with reputable online stores like supermediastore, rima, newegg, and meritline.

I buy my verbatim DVD+R hub printables from amazon.com and my LS and plain silver top verbatim's from newegg when they are on sale.

TY's from neato should be the real deal but you can probably find better prices at the online stores I recommended. In regards to DVD-R or DVD+R, try some of each and see which works best for you. If you go with +r's be sure to booktype them dvd-rom.

Your Phillips drive ought to record Phillips, Memorex, HP, and Verbatim discs as well as Taiyo Yuden discs. (CMC makes most of the Phillips, Memorex, HP, AND Verbatim discs; so that anti-CMC argument has to be taken with a grain of salt.) Verbatim and TY discs are more compatible with more drives than the other discs, and that means they have far fewer problems. But since your drive is a Phillips drive, compatibility should not be problem.

LightScribe printing takes a long time and uses up the some of the finite life of a laser diode in order to get a monochrome image. An ink-jet printable disc offers multi-color images, faster printing time, and longer life for a laser. That makes more sense to me. Paper labels on DVDs will cause out of focus problems at the outer edge of the discs as the paper contracts and expands with humidity. They should NEVER be used on DVDs.

@ ls1ssws6,
hello, i have an epson r220 and have been very happy with it burning on Inkjet printable Verbs, I have also used both types of ink the epson kind and generic kind and really didn't see that much of a difference between the two, overall excellent printer for the price

Reading this thread in the begining i just knew i was gunna see Joe, post defending CMC Mag disks, and sure enough there it is. LOL

Anyway, i 100% agree with Mort, stay away from memorex and Phillips cuz like Mort said its a CRAPSHOOT
Thats why when u buy Verbatims, or TYs you know what ur getting for ur money.

when it comes to the epson printer...how thirsty is the printer? about how many full color dvds could i make before i had to refil the ink? and is it like other printers i have to fill everyone when one runs low or can you just refil certain ones at a time? how much does the ink run?

There are 6 individual ink catridges and u can replace them one at a time.

As far as printing Full dvds not sure on the exact number but i would guess tons, maybe (100-150 this is a guess) becuz it not that big of space.
also say when one of the my inks is low it would say that there is like 20% left of the ink and also would say u can print 20 more like what u just printed, hope that wasn't confusing. so thats how i came up with the 100-150 thinking that one dvd takes up about 1% of the ink up, however i do realize that each ink is different.

Also the ink doesn't run if u let it dry for like an hour. this also depends on the quality of the paper on the dvd too.

I use verbatim DVD+R hub printable media and my discs are dry to the touch in about a minute or less. You can buy a whole set (6) of aftermarket cartridges for $25 or less at several online sites, merritline being one. Staples will also give you a $3.00 voucher for your empty cartridges.
