I checked through some of the threads with little luck, so I'm hoping for a quick answer. I recently ran out of my supply, been awhile since I've had to purchase any disks.
What is the key to identifying Sony Ty's nowadays?
Obviously MIJ - do they have to have the white octagon spacer still?
Thanks.

Good call Cincy, that was where I was looking at.
Thanks for the -R call, I've been using 8x +R's for so long now, I would have thought they were the guaranteed TY's.

Thanks for the help fellas - I was able to score a couple spindles of the 16x -R at my local Staples. Coded out as TY03, so I am golden.
Much thanks!

actually, a correction is needed here:
you would actually look for the "WHITE" octagonal spacers to find the Taiyo Yudens~ :)
but, for Sony brand, for the 16x MIJ DVD-R this holds true (TYG03s), but for the 16x DVD+R Sonys, it don't matter what color or shape the spacer is or even the country of origin does not matter, the 16x DVD+R SONY brand media ARE NOT Taiyo Yudens... :)
if you are lucky enough to find the Sony 8x DVD+R MIJ, those are Taiyo Yuden made (YUDEN000T02) coding...i have a few spindles of these left from the past but MINE had the ROUND WHITE spacers, not the white octagonal ones...must be "older stock"...either way, IF you can even find the 8x DVD+R Sony MIJ, just buy them...that's the "good stuff" right there...only thing u need to worry about is the country of origin IF your intent is to score some Taiyo Yuden media...it MUST be "MIJ" = made in japan for this to hold true...but if you don't care about getting TYs, then it doesn't matter with Sony brand~ LOL

CORRECTION: a white octagonal spacer has never been found on the 16x +R Sonys, so one can NOT say that it doesn't matter. That's faulty logic. If a white octagonal spacer is ever found on the 16x +Rs, they may be TYs.
As of this moment, no 16x +R Sony TYs have been found, so the assumption is, Sony has not contracted with TY to manufacture them. TY is currently only making -R media for Sony. Simple.

I have a spindle of those SONY+R Discs (1-8 times). They coded out TY'S. Wal Mart around me has them all the time around here. Just the fact they cost just under $25 per 50 pack (ouch).

CORRECTION to YOUR correction :
i have spoken to my TY rep. and have been notified that Taiyo Yuden will NOT sell/manufacture 16x DVD+R YUDEN000T03s to Sony or Fuji or anyone else for that matter here in the U.S. markets~ :) (i am speaking only of course for USA markets, other countries already do have 16x DVD+R TYs under different brand names) at least till the end of this year 2006, unless TY changes their contracts w/ various other "brand names"...what i have stated above is ACCURATE, so go on w/ ur "faulty logic" and do your "white octagonal spacer" theory...it's NOT gonna happen~

"...at least till the end of this year 2006, unless TY changes their contracts w/ various other "brand names"..."
That's exactly what I just said. There is no current contract. It doesn't mean that this state of affairs will exist in perpetuity. Your own statement says that things could change starting in January of 2007. It's already September, going on October, so 2007 ain't that far away.
Like I said, the theory of the octagonal spacer is correct, period. You're not going to find it on +R media right now, but that doesn't mean that the theory itself is wrong. You're conflating the absence of something with the impossibility of something, which is wrong.

@negritude
to ASSUME that Sony's marketing tactic of using the "white octagonal" spacer to differentiate between the "TYs" and Sony's own produced media is not completely valid, but you are in fact correct that at least for CURRENT stock (on the 16x rated speed discs), the spacer theory DOES hold true~ :)
one would have to ASSUME that Sony doesn't change their packaging strategy in the near future for your theory to hold true, i've purchased at least 10 spindles of 50-pack Sony 8x DVD+R MIJ with the WHITE ROUND spacers that yielded Taiyo Yudens (YUDEN000T02), whether or not i got "older stock" before Sony started using the white octagonal spacers in their MIJ spindles so one could quickly find the TYs can be left for argument~
while the possibility of Sony contracting with Taiyo Yuden in 2007 IS very much a feasibility, i was mearly speaking on behalf of TY and what is CURRENTLY available today for consumers to purchase~ :)
you make a valid point in me conflating the two topics in which i was discussing, however, it was not to be construed as a play on words; i was simply explaining for the "avg joe" user that goes out to their local Best Buy/Staples/B&M retailer to pick up a spindle of Sony brand media, given they are informed with ACCURATE information CURRENTLY to distinguish between Taiyo Yuden produced media and Sony's own, at this time, YES, ur white octagonal spacer theory DOES hold true for 16x rated media, but if one simply looks at the spacer color and shape, for 8x rated DVD+R Sony media, a person could simply overlook and pass up some genuine TYs if they base their choosing procedure based SOLELY on the spacer shape and color~ :) i myself would not have purchased these YUDEN000T02s 8x DVD+R Sony MIJ if i had gone on spacer theory alone (white round as i mentioned earlier), i feel i picked up excellent media by taking a "chance" that others may have well overlooked if their trip entailed ONLY LOOKING for the white octagonal spacers...
have a good one

Well if your local walmart has the DVD+R take in one of the staple adds for 12.98 and they'll match the price. I did it and ended up with a whole bunch of the MIJ's. Didn't know they matched the price til I asked them, and no one really had bought them at the price they had them there. So good luck.
