I purchased two packages of Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD+R from SuperMediaStore (YUDEN000-T02-00). I burned two discs with Shrink/DeCrypter with no problems. Both discs play on my Sony DVD RW DW-D22A (computer), but will not play on my Sony DVD Player (SLV-D360P). I previously purchased Fuji MIJ (YUDEN000-T02-00) and they do play on both players. The only differences were in the copying process and burn speed. The two new discs were re-authored and edited on Shrink, while the Fuji burned disc was only re-authored. The burn speed on the new discs were at 8X, while the Fuji was possibly set at 4X. Good news, I re-burned a disc at 4X and the player recognized the disc. Why is that? Is it recommended not to burn a disc at its max speed?

The fact that a second burn at 4X worked eliminates any change to the files as a problem. My suspicion is the the weak link is the Sony DVD player. Many DVD player, particularly older ones, are finicky about recorded discs. Newer players have fewer problems. Recording at a slower speed often allows better formation of the burn marks that are meant to resemble the pits on movie DVDs. Think of it as "better contrast" between the dark and light spots that is analogous to better pit edges. Some recording drives show little difference between recordings at the fastest and slower speeds, but others will perform better at speeds slightly slower than their maximum (and some will overburn 16X discs at the slowest speeds--also a problem.) Batches of discs do vary a bit, but I think that the real cause of the differences are the DVD player first, the recording drive second, and the discs last.

Yes, a good rule for burning speeds is half of what the Max speeds says.

A once staunch advocate of burning 4x on all my 8x discs (and recommending the same to others), i have for quite some time now been doing 8x on everything (even when using Nero's multiple recorders feature, one burner being in a USB2.0 enclosure - i use this feature very heavily). I do very rarely get the odd disc that craps out at the beginning of a burn (usually it's on my MCC003 discs but very very rarely on a TY disc). If the burn fails with 'session fixation error' i can always reuse the disc (successfully) as nothing's been burned to it when that error occurs). Some of these MCC003 (made in Taiwan)just aren't up to par i don't think, most i've used so far in these tubs of 50 have managed 8x in the usual 8mins at 8x but further down the tub, the discs are taking twice as long to burn (the odd one actually fails the burn, (whether burnt in 8mins or 15mins) but the majority are fine).

I would suggest sticking to 4x for a while, just to find consistent results..it rtook me a very long time to wean myself of 4x as i had bulletproof results at 4x, but it's all about finding a consistent method that works for you
